DESCRIPTION:False Promises: The Struggle for Black Voting Rights in 1800’s Ohio \nIn False Promises\, the fight for Black voting rights in Ohio comes alive through narratives of men of color who defied the state’s nineteenth-century restrictions on suffrage. Though ratification of the Fifteenth Amendment ostensibly extended the franchise\, state election laws still forced men of color into a perilous struggle for full citizenship. Ric S. Sheffield depicts their courage and determination\, revealing their humanity through stories of sacrifice\, resistance\, and hope. Weaving together historical records with imaginative reconstructions of dialogue\, setting\, and descriptive elements beyond the dusty courthouse pages\, these stories recount the lived experiences of those who risked everything to exercise their right to vote. \nRic S. Sheffield\, author of We Got By: A Black Family’s Journey in the Heartland and False Promises: The Struggle for Black Voting Rights in 1800s Ohio\, has researched\, taught\, written\, and lectured extensively about rural diversity in general\, and the Black experience in small town America in particular. As co-director (with Prof. Howard Sacks\, Kenyon College) of the award-winning Community Within: Black Experience in Knox County\, Ohio project and co-director (with Prof. Brooke Bryan\, Antioch College) of the Great Lakes Colleges Association’s (GLCA) Oral History in the Liberal Arts (OHLA) program\, he has designed and executed projects intended to explore minority communities in small town America. He also offers workshops on exploring diversity in rural geographies and cultural contexts. \nThis event is sponsored by the Washington County Public Library and is FREE and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:This year’s Baker Peace Conference (April 16–17) examines the state of American power. In what ways is American influence in the world changing? How should we assess U.S. strength? How healthy are key aspects of American soft power\, such as the country’s systems of higher education and democratic governance? These and other questions will be addressed by the conference’s nine speakers\, who come from a range of academic\, journalistic\, military\, and diplomatic backgrounds. \n  \nThe conference will begin on the evening of Thursday\, April 16th with a keynote address delivered by retired brigadier general and business executive\, Mark Arnold. The following day the conference will have two panels\, a domestic-focused one in the morning from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM and a foreign-focused one in the afternoon from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Each panel will have four 25-minute talks followed by twenty minutes of Q&A. All events will be free\, open to the public\, and supplied with refreshments. DESCRIPTION:The Program: Spend the day writing: Poetry\, Nature Writing\, and Songwriting.  We will read and reflect on famous pieces of writing and craft our own poems\, nature reflections\, and songs.  There will be times for independent writing and group co writing interspersed with outdoor exploration and group games. We will be spending most of the day outdoors with with access to indoor space for restrooms and in case of inclement weather. \nThe Mission: Our mission is to bring creative youth together to grow\, share\, and connect with each other and with nature through the power of words.  We aim to help build self-esteem\, confidence\, and awareness through writing and self-expression.  We provide a supportive environment where young writers can explore their creative ideas. \nThe Location: Solid Ground Farm is an ecological education and research campus in Appalachian Ohio. The Farm is home to Rising Appalachia’s youth outdoor adventure and exploration programs and to the place-based elementary education program\, Solid Ground School. \nThe Schedule: \n9:40-10 AM – Drop off \n10AM – Check in\, Ice Breakers\, Games \n11AM – Poetry in the wild \n12PM – Lunch \n12:30PM – Hike/Nature Writing \n2PM – Co-writing a Song \n4PM – Pick up \nThe Writers: All youth ages 9-12 are invited to attend. \nBe sure to bring:-Journal/Notebook-Pen/Pencil-Water Bottle-Lunch-Hiking Shoes-Raincoat/Poncho-Jacket/Layers \nLunch: Please send your child with a packed lunch.  We will provide snacks.  Dietary restrictions and allergies will be collected at registration. \nThanks to a very generous donation made by the Athens Artist Memorial Project (AAMP)\, we are able to offer this workshop on a sliding scale rate of $50-$100!
