DESCRIPTION:The Program: Spend the day writing: Poetry\, Nature Writing\, and Songwriting.  We will read and reflect on famous pieces of writing and craft our own poems\, nature reflections\, and songs.  There will be times for independent writing and group co writing interspersed with outdoor exploration and group games. We will be spending most of the day outdoors with with access to indoor space for restrooms and in case of inclement weather. \nThe Mission: Our mission is to bring creative youth together to grow\, share\, and connect with each other and with nature through the power of words.  We aim to help build self-esteem\, confidence\, and awareness through writing and self-expression.  We provide a supportive environment where young writers can explore their creative ideas. \nThe Location: Solid Ground Farm is an ecological education and research campus in Appalachian Ohio. The Farm is home to Rising Appalachia’s youth outdoor adventure and exploration programs and to the place-based elementary education program\, Solid Ground School. \nThe Schedule: \n9:40-10 AM – Drop off \n10AM – Check in\, Ice Breakers\, Games \n11AM – Poetry in the wild \n12PM – Lunch \n12:30PM – Hike/Nature Writing \n2PM – Co-writing a Song \n4PM – Pick up \nThe Writers: All youth ages 9-12 are invited to attend. \nBe sure to bring:-Journal/Notebook-Pen/Pencil-Water Bottle-Lunch-Hiking Shoes-Raincoat/Poncho-Jacket/Layers \nLunch: Please send your child with a packed lunch.  We will provide snacks.  Dietary restrictions and allergies will be collected at registration. \nThanks to a very generous donation made by the Athens Artist Memorial Project (AAMP)\, we are able to offer this workshop on a sliding scale rate of $50-$100!

SUMMARY:Disability Commission 8th Annual Walk\, Talk & Roll
DESCRIPTION:The Athens City Commission on Disabilities is hosting its 8th Annual Walk\, Talk\, and Roll next Friday\, April 10th\, 11:30 a.m. to 1 pm at the Athens County Courthouse. The event focuses on accessibility issues in Athens. Participants are encouraged to walk or roll to all “stations\,” each within a couple of blocks from the courthouse. These information booths include a variety of themes\, from sidewalk policy to public transportation to improvements Athens City has made toward better access for all. It also includes the Court Street Challenge with plenty of wheelchairs available for anyone who wants to give it a try! Participants who attend all stations will be entered into a raffle for a gift certificate to Bagel Street Deli.

DESCRIPTION:Loosely based on the hit TV show from the 1970s\, The Dukes of Hazzard takes us back to rural Georgia where the Duke family – Uncle Jesse and cousins Bo\, Luke\, and Daisy – do their best to use their General Lee hotrod to out-maneuver the greed of local commissioner Boss Hogg and his lackey Sheriff Rosce P. Coltrane who are looking to put a stop to the Duke’s moonshine-running operation (or\, at least\, take a hefty piece of the action for themselves). Directed by Broken Lizard alum Jay Chandrasekhar and starring Johnny Knoxville and Seann William Scott\, this fun\, action-comedy also stars Willie Nelson and Jessica Simpson. \nAbout the series \nFollowing the success of the full capacity screening of our 50th anniversary of Appalshop’s STRANGER WITH A CAMERA screening in 2020\, the Athena Cinema and partners present an exciting new film series on Appalachian culture and depictions in film. \nThe mission of the series is to connect Athens and the university community to the surrounding region by examining the different ways Appalachia has been represented through film. DESCRIPTION:It’s playtime at The Nest!\n\nBreak the routine\, get out of the house and come let your little ones play in a fresh space while you get to talk with other grown-ups for awhile!\n\nCome and go as you please anytime during our open play hours.  Toys and activities are geared towards babies and toddlers but older siblings are welcome to come along.\n\nWhile you’re here\, peruse the lending library of books\, DVDs and even baby carriers free to borrow!\n\nTuesdays masks are optional\, while Thursdays are mask-only for those who prefer a “mask-on” environment.\n\nDisinfectant wipes are always available and we have a tub for toys that have been “mouthed” so they can be washed before future use.\n\nA changing table and toddler potty are available as well as a bottle warmer and fridge for storing formula/milk.
