SUMMARY:Fall Sustainability Series: TAKING ROOT: THE VISION OF WANGARI MAATHAI
DESCRIPTION:About the film \nTaking Root tells the dramatic story of Kenyan Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Wangari Maathai whose simple act of planting trees grew into a nationwide movement to safeguard the environment\, protect human rights\, and defend democracy—a movement for which this charismatic woman became an icon and an international inspiration. This film\, by co-directors Alan Dater and Lisa Merton\, weaves a compelling and dramatic narrative of one woman’s personal journey in the context of the turbulent political and environmental history of her country. \nAbout the series \nAthena Cinema\, University Libraries\, and OHIO’s Environmental Studies Program present the 11th annual Sustainability Film Series. \nThis year’s batch of films will be centered on reflecting the urgency of what is before us. After a decade of screening movies and hosting discussions led by experts from the OHIO student body and faculty and the Athens community detailing the problems facing the world\, this semester’s focus will be on solutions. \nThe films will demonstrate that a collaborative approach to problem-solving — involving all members of our global community\, regardless of age\, ethnicity\, or gender — is a necessity. Education is the first crucial step in both understanding the world’s problems and developing sustainable solutions. \nFollowing the screening of each of these beautiful\, thought-provoking\, and timely films\, audience members are invited to join us for a panel discussion hosted by OHIO faculty members\, students\, and members of the Athens community. \nThis screening will take place at The Ridges Auditorium located at 135 Ridges Circle.\nThe series is possible thanks to the support of: Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs\, OHIO Honors Program\, Honors Tutorial College\, Cutler Scholars\, Office of Sustainability\, Center for Campus & Community Engagement\, University College\, Athens International Film and Video Festival\, and beloved nonprofits and businesses. \nFree admission and post-show discussion as part of the Fall Sustainability Series.

SUMMARY:The Met: Live in HD: Heggie’s DEAD MAN WALKING
DESCRIPTION:American composer Jake Heggie’s compelling masterpiece\, the most widely performed new opera of the last 20 years\, sees its premiere at the Met: Live in HD in a haunting new production by Ivo van Hove. Based on Sister Helen Prejean’s memoir about her fight for the soul of a condemned murderer\, Dead Man Walking matches the high drama of its subject with Heggie’s beautiful and poignant music and a brilliant libretto by Terrence McNally. Met Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin takes the podium\, with mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato starring as Sister Helen. The outstanding cast also features bass-baritone Ryan McKinny as the death-row inmate Joseph De Rocher\, soprano Latonia Moore as Sister Rose\, and legendary mezzo-soprano Susan Graham—who sang Helen Prejean in the opera’s 2000 premiere—as De Rocher’s mother. \nDue to the current repairs going on at the Athena Cinema\, this program will be presented as a pre-recorded encore at the Ridges Auditorium. The screening starts at 12:55pm and is estimated to end at 4:09pm.  \nContent Advisory: Dead Man Walking contains a depiction of a rape and murder\, as well as other adult themes and strong language. \nAdmission $20 (senior $18\, children $8) \nOHIO Student: Free \nThanks to Arts for OHIO\, we are able to offer a limited number of FREE student tickets available on first-come\, first-serve basis. Must have valid student I.D. \nClick here to view the rest of the Met: Live in HD schedule. \nSpecial thanks to George Weckman and the following supporters: \nOhio Performing Arts & Film \nArts for Ohio \nCollege of Fine Arts \nOhio Arts Council

SUMMARY:OhioHealth UpBEAT History Group: The Geology of Ohio through History
DESCRIPTION:Ohio’s geologic history spans millions of years and is revealed in its rocks and sediments. These materials are a record of the complex interactions between the forces of deposition and erosion. Studying what lies beneath our feet helps us learn more about Ohio’s rich geologic history. Join us as Ohio Geological Survey geologists discuss the natural forces that shaped the Ohio we see today\, ranging from tectonic events that acted on bedrock to form the Appalachian Mountains to the glaciations that once covered about three-fourths of Ohio. Andy Nash and Tyler Norris will talk about Ohio’s geology as a whole and also focus on geologic features located around Athens. RSVP is required for joining program in-person. Virtual attendance is also available. UpBEAT (Be Educated and Active Together) is a program for those 55 years and over. Membership is free. To sign up to receive our monthly UpBEAT newsletter\, RSVP\, or with questions please contact Mary Jane Timmons\, UpBEAT Program Coordinator by phone at 740-566-4680 or e-mail at MaryJane.Timmons@OhioHealth.com.

SUMMARY:OHIO’s Tantrum Theater presents Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night”
DESCRIPTION:Ohio University’s Tantrum Theater will present William Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night\,” also known as “What You Will\,” directed by guest artist and retired School of Theater professor Shelley Delaney\, in Ohio University’s Forum Theater in the RTV Building\, from Nov 9-11 and 15-18 at 8 p.m. There will also be a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday\, Nov. 18.\n\nA shipwreck in perilous waters creates a sea of confusion on land in Shakespeare’s freewheeling romcom of loss\, longing\, mistaken identity\, obsession\, revenge and madness. Anything can happen in coastal Illyria\, where characters leap in heart first: transcending gender\, upending propriety\, spurning noise ordinances\, or… What You Will!\n\nAn ensemble of students performs Shakespeare’s most musical comedy with the assistance of professional visiting guest artists. The full cast list can be found online here.\n\nAssisting Delaney includes Actor’s Equity Association guest artists Chivas Michael (Sir Toby)\, Steven Strafford (Sir Andrew) and Leslie Ann Boyden (Stage Manager)\, set design by MFA design student Hannah Carey\, costumes by theater faculty member C. David Russell\, lighting design by Tantrum Artistic Director Michael Lincoln\, composition and sound design by guest artist and OHIO alum Megan “Deets” Culley\, music direction by guest artist and OHIO alum Devin Sudman and sound engineering by local guest artist Drew Krag. A full list of those part of the crew is available here.\n\nA live streaming of the production is also available for select performances. Running time for the show is approximately two hours and 15 minutes\, with one 15-minute intermission. An ASL performance is scheduled for Thursday\, Nov. 16\, with a cast talkbacks on Nov. 11 and 16\, following the show.\n\nTickets are on sale now and available here. They can also be purchased the day of the performance at the venue\, but seat availability is not guaranteed. Tickets prices start at $10 and are based on seating location. Students with a valid OHIO ID can purchase $5 discount tickets or free limited “rush” tickets the night of the show\, based on availability.\n\nShakespeare’s “Twelfth Night”\, or “What You Will” is part of the 2023-24 theater season\, which also includes productions by The College of Fine Arts’ School of Theater\, and the student-run Vibrancy Theater\, each presenting live\, staged shows at venues in Athens\, Ohio.
