SUMMARY:Multicultural Genealogical Center Speaker and Light Lunch
DESCRIPTION:Tom O’Grady will talk about The Burr Oak Connection:  Interesting Characters from Morgan\, Athens and Perry Counties at the Multicultural Genealogical Center in Chesterhill\, Ohio.  Once asked to give a history of the area that became Burr Oak Lake\, Tom realized he was ignorant of the story of the farms and churches along the tributaries of Sunday Creek that were inundated with the installation of the Congressman Tom Jenkins Dam.  But\, he could tell stories about some of the interesting characters. \n  \nTom O’Grady sailed as a deck worker on the Great Lakes aboard the ore carrier\, S.S. Middletown\, a sister-ship of the ill-fated Edmund Fitzgerald. He served two years in the armed forces with a tour in South Korea. Tom surveyed for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. In 1984 he launched the first comprehensive curbside recycling program in the state of Ohio in Athens County. Tom has been promoting waste reduction and a sustainable economy for more than forty years.  He has been a voice for the preservation of the historic Athens Asylum.  O’Grady has also been an instructor of Observational Astronomy in the evenings at Ohio University for forty years. He has spent the past twenty-five years as a student of Ohio history researching its natural and cultural geography\, the mound builders\, the barnbuilders and regional settlement\, Ohio canals\, iron furnaces\, and several of Ohio’s interesting characters and their stories. O’Grady is a founding board member of Friends of Ohio Barns and serves on the board of Ohio’s Hill Country Heritage Area. Tom has been working with the leadership of the Athens County Historical Society\, now the Southeast Ohio History Center\, for more than 25 years.

DESCRIPTION:It’s playtime at The Nest!\n\nBreak the routine\, get out of the house and come let your little ones play in a fresh space while you get to talk with other grown-ups for awhile!\n\nCome and go as you please anytime during our open play hours.  Toys and activities are geared towards babies and toddlers but older siblings are welcome to come along.\n\nWhile you’re here\, peruse the lending library of books\, DVDs and even baby carriers free to borrow!\n\nTuesdays masks are optional\, while Thursdays are mask-only for those who prefer a “mask-on” environment.\n\nDisinfectant wipes are always available and we have a tub for toys that have been “mouthed” so they can be washed before future use.\n\nA changing table and toddler potty are available as well as a bottle warmer and fridge for storing formula/milk.

DESCRIPTION:On Sunday March 30th\, there will be an outdoor exhibition of photojournalist Milton Lindsay’s long-term photography project looking at the H-2A Seasonal Farmworker Visa Program in North Carolina and Mexico. 30\, 20×24 inch images depicting life for this group of transient agricultural workers\, who spend 6-10 months working on American farms before returning to Mexico during the winter. Nationwide\, there are 300\,000 H-2A Farmworkers\, with 10% of the population living in North Carolina. Since 2015\, the program has grown by 300%\, largely due to increased deportations during the first Trump Administration. \n(I was unable to upload the poster I made up\, but I can sent it over) \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:The Friends of the Athens County Public Libraries is having a Book Donation Drive Thru event on Saturday\, March 29\, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Athens Public Library\, 30 Home Street\, Athens. People can bag or box up their used good-condition books\, drive them up to the front entrance of the Athens Public Library\, and let Friends volunteers remove them from their cars. \nThe Friends of the Athens County Public Libraries support all the libraries of the countywide library system. Our major source of revenue is earned through our permanent used Book Store located within the Athens Public Library. People also may support The Friends through memberships. The Friends success has been made possible because of the generosity of book donors and customers of our book sales\, as well as loyal members.
