DESCRIPTION:The Diabetes Institute offers the only Type 1 Diabetes Camp to youth ages 8-17 living with diabetes in Southeastern Ohio. Campers can connect with peers\, learn important diabetes management skills\, and have a lot of fun! Your child will grow their confidence in managing their diabetes and in themselves. \nDaily activities include arts and crafts\, music\, drama\, games\, physical activity\, and adventures such as a low ropes course and climbing wall. Our camp encourages independent diabetes management while providing medical staff to help educate and assist campers when needed. The group environment allows the campers to learn coping skills needed for everyday management of their diabetes. \nImportant information: \n– Camp runs June 9th to June 13th from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm. \n– On campus housing is available for families for four nights ($100). \n– Registration is $50. Scholarships are available; no camper is turned away for inability to pay.

DESCRIPTION:Want to get your brain and body moving and meet new friends? Scottish Country Dance is a social dance form a bit like contra\, but with more footwork. The name of the game is fun! \nThis four-week class meets every Sunday from 2 to 3 pm at the Athens Community Center between June 6 and 29. Each week we’ll be building on the previous week’s session\, so drop-ins aren’t possible. DESCRIPTION:The Multicultural Genealogical Center will welcome Dr. Vibert Cambridge when he shares with us “The African American Presence in Guyanese Musical Life during the 20th Century”.  \nGuyana is the only English-speaking nation state in South America. African American music—folk music\, religious music\, blues\, ragtime\, jazz\, musical theater\, rhythm and blues\, soul\, funk\, hip hop\, and rap—has had a special presence in Guyanese musical life and\, by extension\, Guyanese social and cultural life.  \nDr. Vibert Compton Cambridge is professor emeritus in the School of Media Arts and Studies\, Scripps College of Communication\, Ohio University. He has been a member of the Caribbean Scholars Association since 1986. During his career at Ohio University he has been Assistant and Associate Director\, School of Telecommunication (now School of Media Arts)\, Director\, Communication and Development Studies\, Center for International Studies\, and Chair\, Department of African American Studies.  He has served as President of the Guyana Cultural Association of New York\, Inc.(2012 – 2022). In 2016\, when Guyana celebrated the 50th anniversary of its independence\, Dr. Cambridge was awarded Guyana’s Golden Arrow of Achievement (A.A.)\, for his contributions to the study of Guyana’s social and cultural history. In 2013\, he received the Award for Excellence in Global Engagement from Ohio University. Dr. Cambridge now serves as the Chair\, History and Research Committee\, Mount Zion Baptist Church Preservation Society (DBA Mount Zion Black Cultural Center).

DESCRIPTION:It’s playtime at The Nest!\n\nBreak the routine\, get out of the house and come let your little ones play in a fresh space while you get to talk with other grown-ups for awhile!\n\nCome and go as you please anytime during our open play hours.  Toys and activities are geared towards babies and toddlers but older siblings are welcome to come along.\n\nWhile you’re here\, peruse the lending library of books\, DVDs and even baby carriers free to borrow!\n\nTuesdays masks are optional\, while Thursdays are mask-only for those who prefer a “mask-on” environment.\n\nDisinfectant wipes are always available and we have a tub for toys that have been “mouthed” so they can be washed before future use.\n\nA changing table and toddler potty are available as well as a bottle warmer and fridge for storing formula/milk.
