SUMMARY:Actors Guild of Parkersburg opens on September 29 with “See How They Run.”
DESCRIPTION:The 2023-2024 season at the Actors Guild of Parkersburg opens on September 29 with the hilarious British farce “See How They Run.” \nThe show features Penelope Toop\, a young American actress who has married an English vicar\, but can’t seem to settle in to life as a vicar’s wife in a small village. When an old friend of hers shows up unexpectedly\, she hatches a plan for the two of them to take in a show in a nearby town. Her friend is an American soldier\, and he has to follow strict rules about where he is seen in uniform. Penelope convinces him to masquerade as a vicar\, and the silliness begins. When an important Bishop shows up\, along with a visiting priest\, and an escaped Russian prisoner who also masquerades as a vicar\, no one is quite sure what to think. \nCurtain time for “See How They Run” is 8 PM on September 29 and 30 and October 6 and 7 and 2:30 PM on October 1. Tickets cost $20 ($18 for students and seniors) and are available now at https://www.actors-guild.com/buy-tickets.html. \nThe production is sponsored by Napoli’s and is rated PG.

SUMMARY:But Not for MY Children: The Holland Brothers’ Remarkable Journey from Enslavement
DESCRIPTION:The Southeast Ohio History Center and the Mt. Zion Baptist Church Preservation Society are cosponsoring the program\, But Not for MY Children: The Holland Brothers’ Remarkable Journey from Enslavement by Scott Britton at the History Center on Thursday\, September 28th at 5:30pm. \nBrothers Milton\, William\, and James Holland were all born to an enslaved woman named Matilda and a white Texas politician named Bird Holland. Bird Holland arranged to send these three sons to be educated at the Albany Manual Labor Academy in Athens County in the late 1850s. The Academy educated both black and white children. \nBird Holland would serve as Secretary of State for Texas at the outbreak of the American Civil War and was killed in battle serving as a Confederate officer in Louisiana in 1864 when his three sons were serving in the Union Army. Milton Holland played a significant role in recruiting Ohio’s first Black unit\, the 5th United States Colored Infantry (USCI)\, on the Athens County Fairgrounds. Milton Holland was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his heroism and leadership during the Petersburg Campaign in late September 1864. \nScott Britton from The Castle Historic House Museum in Marietta is a native of Washington County\, Ohio and was a Co-Founder of the Civil War Round Table of the Mid-Ohio Valley. \nThe Southeast Ohio History Center is located at 24 West State Street and offers limited parking in the rear off of North Congress Street. \nFor more information about this presentation or about the History Center call 7405922280.

SUMMARY:‘Microplastic Madness’ to be screened Sept. 27 at The Ridges
DESCRIPTION:As part of Ohio University’s Sustainability Film Series\, Athens ReThink Plastics is hosting the film\, “Microplastics Madness\,” on Wednesday\, Sept. 27\, at The Ridges Auditorium in Athens. Admission is free for the film\, which starts at 7 p.m. \n“Microplastics Madness” tells the “story of 56 fifth-graders from P.S. 15 in Red Hook\, Brooklyn (New York City)\, living on the frontline of the climate crisis – whose actions on plastic pollution morph into extraordinary leadership and scalable victories\,” according to the film description. \nDuring the Sept. 27 film event\, a raffle prize with several samples of reusable bags and other earth-friendly items will be awarded after a short panel discussion. The panel will feature local citizens and students engaged in activities addressing plastic pollution\, offering realistic examples on how to counter this challenging problem. Those who come early can enjoy free popcorn\, Village Bakery cookies\, and books for educators to use in their classroom\, all compliments of Athens ReThink Plastics and the Sierra Club. \nAthens ReThink Plastics is a local group concerned about the adverse health and environmental impacts of the production\, consumption and discarding of plastic products. Earlier this year\, the group successfully lobbied Athens City Council to adopt a ban on single-use plastics in the city. It goes into effect on Jan. 1\, 2024. \nOn select Wednesdays through Nov. 1\, a different film touching on the sustainability issue is being screened as part of the Sustainability Film Series. All of the films take place in the Ridges Auditorium\, 135 Ridges Circle\, on Ohio University’s Ridges Campus. This theater is standing in for the Athena Cinema this fall while that uptown facility is being renovated. \nOhio University entities involved in this 11th annual Sustainability Film Series (athenacinema.com/sustainabilityseries) include\, among others\, the Athena Cinema\, University Libraries and Environmental Studies Program. \nFor more information\, please contact athensrethinkplastics@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:The Guess Who
DESCRIPTION:The Guess Who is a legendary Canadian band who enjoyed chart topping hits in the late 60s and early 70s with an impressive catalogue of songs including “American Woman\,” “These Eyes\,” and “No Time.” During the course of its career\, the band has released 11 studio albums\, and charted 14 Top 40 hit singles\, 2 of which went to number one in the United States. The Guess Who is best known internationally for its 1970 album\, American Woman\, which hit number one in Canada and number nine in the United States\, with five other albums also hitting the top ten in Canada. Their fan base spans multiple generations. Very few bands have survived numerous member changes — let alone having smash hits with each lineup — but The Guess Who’s motto is “the music is the message.” \n  \nThe most recent and up-to-date version of the band has mastered a wildly entertaining romp through the early hits mixed in with their current creations\, while managing to take the whole experience to a new level. Their most recent musical offering is stunningly sophisticated\, searingly emotional\, and musically eclectic\, while remaining eminently singalongable. \n  \nTheir live show is a celebration of life\, being alive\, and thriving in these uncertain times. The Guess Who never leave anything less than their hearts on the stage at the end of every performance.
