SUMMARY:Multicultural Genealogical Center Speaker & Light Lunch
DESCRIPTION: MGC welcomes Kenton Butcher as he shares “Country Roads and Paper Trails”\, part of a book project called Illegible: Black Appalachian Self-Publishing\, 1990-2010.  The talk will begin with the history of Appalachian stereotypes and the way in which they skew ideas about the history of the region and its inhabitants. It shows that one of the effects of Appalachian stereotypes is to erase the history of people of color from the region\, and the talk then looks at how Black Appalachians have used self-publishing to preserve and transmit their own histories. While many people consider self-published books as unimportant or unsuccessful—and in an age when A. I. seems to make human writing obsolete—this talk is also about why self-authorship and self-publishing remains vital.  \nKenton Butcher is an assistant professor at Bucknell University where he teaches courses in African American literature. He graduated from Federal Hocking High School in 2005 and received a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 2023. He recently received a fellowship from the Institute of Citizens and Scholars to complete his first book project\, titled Illegible: Black Appalachian Self-Publishing\, 1990-2010. \n

DESCRIPTION:Join Nurseryman\, Mike Allison of Five Springs Farm\, and Agroforestry Practitioner\, Weston Lombard of Rising Appalachia to learn how to clone and multiply existing trees and shrubs by rooting hard and softwood cuttings\, turning one into dozens. \n  \nDuring the event\, we will work with food bearing Trees like Mulberry\, Fig and Mulberry\, and discover how easy it is to propagate Willow for a variety of applications. \n Each participant will take home a cutting to root and the skills to succeed in home propagation!

Donations will be accepted for the meal with proceeds going to the Ohio Brigade of 50 States for Ukraine to support efforts to send trucks to the Ukrainian Army. DESCRIPTION:Are you looking for opportunities to go canoeing this summer? Join Rural Action for an afternoon float on Burr Oak Lake! The canoe float will take place on Saturday\, May 30th\, from 11 am – 3 pm at Burr Oak Dock Area #3. Lunch will be provided and canoes will be available\, but feel free to bring your own canoe or kayak. Rural Action staff and AmeriCorps members will guide participants in some local water quality education and history as we float on the lake and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature. \nWe will be canoeing on open water and experience is recommended. The watercrafts have a maximum load capacity\, if you have special requirements\, please contact us at beehuelsman@ruralaction.org for accommodations or questions. \nThis event is FREE but your donations are appreciated. Your generous donations help Rural Action continue programming\, education\, and outreach in our region. DESCRIPTION:It’s playtime at The Nest!\n\nBreak the routine\, get out of the house and come let your little ones play in a fresh space while you get to talk with other grown-ups for awhile!\n\nCome and go as you please anytime during our open play hours.  Toys and activities are geared towards babies and toddlers but older siblings are welcome to come along.\n\nWhile you’re here\, peruse the lending library of books\, DVDs and even baby carriers free to borrow!\n\nTuesdays masks are optional\, while Thursdays are mask-only for those who prefer a “mask-on” environment.\n\nDisinfectant wipes are always available and we have a tub for toys that have been “mouthed” so they can be washed before future use.\n\nA changing table and toddler potty are available as well as a bottle warmer and fridge for storing formula/milk.
