SUMMARY:Baileys Summer Trails Day and Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:This volunteer event\, which will take place on June 28th from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.\, will consist of trash cleanup along roads around the Baileys Trail System. Registered volunteers will meet Trail Crew Leaders at the Chauncey-Dover Park Trailhead (located at 8433 West Bailey Road\, Millfield\, OH 45761) of the Baileys Trail System at 1 p.m. This event is in partnership with Athen’s County Sheriff’s Office and AHSWD. \nVolunteers should be prepared to hike over rugged terrain while carrying tools and wearing personal protective equipment (including hard hats\, safety glasses\, and gloves). Volunteers may encounter dirt and mud and get sweaty and dirty while volunteering. There is generally good cell phone coverage throughout the trail system. However\, volunteer projects may be in a location with poor to no cell phone service. \nA typical volunteer event at the Baileys Trail System begins with a group meeting at the Chauncey-Dover Park Trailhead. We will gather to review the day’s plan\, discuss safety\, and sign volunteer forms. The Chauncey-Dover Park Trailhead has a restroom\, and it will be the last opportunity to use a bathroom before heading out on the trails. \nDepending on the project location\, groups may drive an additional ten or fewer miles from the trailhead to the workday access point (as instructed by group leaders). Group Leaders will then pass out personal protective equipment (PPE) and tools\, and the group will hike to the work site. A typical hike to the work site is 1-4 miles on trails or Forest Service access roads. The hiking ranges from easy to moderate terrain\, and it could feel strenuous when carrying a trail tool. \nOnce at the work site\, volunteer projects can range in intensity. Rock armoring is a more strenuous task\, shaping trail drainage is a moderate task\, and brushing is a low-intensity to moderate task. Review the above description to learn more about the day’s planned tasks\, or contact (info@orcaohio.com) the event organizer with questions. \nVolunteers should wear: \n\nClosed-toed shoes with laces and good ankle support\nLong Pants\nWeather-appropriate clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty or sweaty\n\nVolunteers should bring: \n\nWater bottle\nSnack(s)\nDay Pack\n\nORCA will provide all tools and personal protective equipment.  \nJoin us for a volunteer event at the Baileys Trail System. The Baileys Trail System currently features 58 miles of trail in the Wayne National Forest and will be 88 miles upon completion. SUMMARY:Nelsonville Residents Create and Publish First Draft of City Council Ward Map Proposal
DESCRIPTION:For Immediate Release: June 19\, 2025 \nNelsonville Residents Create and Publish First Draft of City Council Ward Map Proposal During Third Town Hall Meeting Hosted by the League of Women Voters of Athens\, League of Women Voters of Ohio \nContact: Trevor Martin\, 415.871.8750\, tmartin@lwvohio.org; Debbie Schmieding\, 740.517.1977\, athensleagueofwomenvoters@gmail.com. \nNelsonville\, OH: On Monday\, June 16th\, the League of Women Voters of Athens County and the League of Women Voters of Ohio held its third town hall meeting to facilitate the creation of new ward maps for the Nelsonville City Council by Nelsonville residents. The meeting was held on Founder’s Day\, the 207th anniversary of Nelsonville’s first city plat map laid out by Daniel Nelson in 1818. \nUsing an interactive mapping software program\, attendees spent the evening discussing and then making real-time decisions about where the district lines for the new ward map should be drawn. “I just really think it’s cool that folks are here as a community drafting a new city council ward map on the anniversary of Nelsonville’s very first map over two hundred years ago\,” said Trevor Martin\, program director for the League of Women Voters of Ohio. \nThe first draft of a new city council ward map proposed by the attending residents of Nelsonville can be found on the Nelsonville Redistricting Website at lwvohio.org/nelsonvilleredistricting. Nelsonville citizens are being asked to review the map and submit feedback or suggestions using the Public Comment Portal found on the website. \n“Please get on the map”\, local business owner Nerissa Neuman encourages fellow Nelsonville residents. ”It’s important that we get as many comments as possible. We need that. I encourage feedback\, whatever kind of feedback it is\, because we need to know what people think.” \nThe League of Women Voters of Athens County and League of Women Voters of Ohio will host another town hall meeting on June 30th before proposing a ward map for the City of Nelsonville based on community feedback in July. The meetings are open to all\, because democracy works best when we all participate. \nWHAT: Fourth Town Hall on Nelsonville Redistricting \nWHEN: 6pm – 8pm Monday\, June 30th\, 2025 \nWHERE: Nelsonville Public Library\, 95 W. Washington\, Nelsonville\, OH 45764 \nTo learn more or get involved please contact Trevor Martin at 415.871.8750.

SUMMARY:Street Mural Ribbon Cutting
DESCRIPTION:FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE \n6/24/2025 \nAthens\, Ohio –The Pedestrian Accessibility and Bicycle Task Force Announces Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for Vibrant New Community Mural \nRibbon Cutting Ceremony for New Street Mural: July 4th\, 11am \nAthens\, Ohio – The Pedestrian Accessibility and Bicycle Task Force is thrilled to announce a ribbon cutting ceremony for a newly completed community mural. This mural is located in the curb bump-out at the intersection of Watt St. and E State St. on the eastside of Athens\, across from the Village Bakery & Cafe.  The ribbon-cutting event will take place on Friday\, July 4th\, at 11am\, directly followed by light refreshments on the Village Bakery’s front porch. \nTitled “The Migration”\, this vivid mural was created by Wren Denny\, a local artist\, with a design selected by popular choice in an online poll. Denny’s colorful work features a salmon run\, with the quote “Wherever you go\, there you are.” \nThe mural’s creation was a collaborative effort. Following Task Force input\, City Engineer Saleh Eldabaja green-lit the bump-out at Watt and State as a traffic calming device in fall of 2024. The installation successfully dropped the average speed on E State St. back below the legal limit. It also gives drivers a better sightline of people wishing to cross to and from the neighborhood. \nNow the bump-out has a third purpose: housing Athens’ first street mural.  \n“The mural is beautiful\, eye-catching\, and will hopefully make people slow down and appreciate the beauty of Athens\,” said Christine Hughes\, co-owner of Village Bakery & Cafe. \nThis mural was made possible by a micro grant from the City of Athens\, paint from Sherwin Williams\, the concentrated efforts of Task Force member George Turner\, and the members of the public who voted on the mural’s design.  \nThe ribbon cutting ceremony will include remarks from the artist\, Wren Denny\, as well as light refreshments from the Village Bakery & Cafe\, who are sponsoring the event. The public is invited to come enjoy this new piece of public art up close and have an opportunity to talk to Task Force members about upcoming projects.  \nThe Athens Pedestrian Accessibility and Bicycle Task Force was created by City Council in 2023\, following the City’s acceptance of the 2023 Pedestrian Accessibility Report. They promote walking and biking as part of a transportation system and provide leadership and expertise to City Council and City staff. This street mural is a pilot project in what they hope will become a new Athens tradition. \nContact: \nStephanie Hunter \nMember of The Pedestrian Accessibility and Bicycle Task Force \n740-818-7684 \nhunterstephanies@yahoo.com

SUMMARY:'The French Have a Word for It' staged reading
DESCRIPTION:The ABC Players invite audiences to close out their 2024–2025 season with a riotous romp through romance\, deception and delightful chaos with a staged reading of The French Have a Word for It on Sunday\, July 13\, at 2 p.m. at the historic Stuart’s Opera House. \nA masterclass in mistaken identities and marital mayhem\, this witty French farce centers around a flirtatious wife who vows to remain faithful—so long as her husband does. When a scheme to expose his fidelity (or lack thereof) spirals wildly out of control\, the stage fills with outraged husbands\, watchful wives\, bumbling bellboys\, seductive schemers\, and increasingly confused police inspectors. In a whirlwind of secret rendezvous\, no one—not even the audience—is quite sure who ends up in bed with whom. \n“My character\, Maria Soldignac\, is the root cause of all the marital problems in this farce\,” Celeste Parsons\, one of the actors\, said. “Maria is a Spanish woman with whom Lucienne’s husband had a brief but intense fling in Madrid. Maria accompanies her husband on a business trip to Paris and makes a passionate bid to renew the affair during the seven days of the trip. When Lucienne is encouraged to witness the liaison\, fireworks erupt.” \nKeeping up with the fun of the farce\, Celeste Parsons is also being joined on stage with her real-life husband\, Jim\, who plays Ernest Redillon\, a sort of playboy in his early 30s who has always been in love with Lucienne\, his best friend’s wife. \n“Lucienne suspects her husband of infidelity and declares that\, if she finds out for sure\, she will avenge herself by having her own affair\,” Jim Parsons explained. “Another woman\, in similar circumstances\, makes the same vow. Both women show up at Redillon’s home to enact their vengeance on their unfaithful husbands. But Redillon has just spent eleven hours in bed with a substitute for Lucienne\, and he is in no condition to meet the expectations of the two ladies who have come to him for their vengeance.” \nWritten by Georges Feydeau and translated by Barnett Shaw\, this staged reading\, directed by Alexa Ross\, offers a unique glimpse into the mechanics of classic farce\, with all the humor and high energy of a full production\, brought vividly to life by a talented local cast. \n“I saw my first French farce right after college\, on a scholarship with the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco\, George Feydeau’s ‘A Flea In Her Ear\,’ costumes and set all in black and white\,” Ross explained. “Researching plays at OU’s Alden Library\, I found another forgotten gem by the same playwright to share with this community. Zut alors\, I hope audiences have a good laugh with this one – we all need one!” \nIn addition to Jim and Celeste Parsons\, the talented cast also includes Ross\, Judi Rioch\, Tristan Medley\, Ken Bowald\, Danny Waldman\, Amy Abercrombie\, Jeff George\, Kristen Kerwin\, StarMary Castro and Joe Balding. \nTickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door. \nThe French Have a Word for It is presented through Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French\, Inc. \nFor more information about the ABC Players and upcoming productions\, visit http://abcplayers.org/. \n###\nAbout ABC Players\nThe ABC Players are a volunteer community theater group based in Nelsonville\, Ohio\, performing at the historic Stuart’s Opera House.
