SUMMARY:The Guess Who
DESCRIPTION:The Guess Who is a legendary Canadian band who enjoyed chart topping hits in the late 60s and early 70s with an impressive catalogue of songs including “American Woman\,” “These Eyes\,” and “No Time.” During the course of its career\, the band has released 11 studio albums\, and charted 14 Top 40 hit singles\, 2 of which went to number one in the United States. The Guess Who is best known internationally for its 1970 album\, American Woman\, which hit number one in Canada and number nine in the United States\, with five other albums also hitting the top ten in Canada. Their fan base spans multiple generations. Very few bands have survived numerous member changes — let alone having smash hits with each lineup — but The Guess Who’s motto is “the music is the message.” \n  \nThe most recent and up-to-date version of the band has mastered a wildly entertaining romp through the early hits mixed in with their current creations\, while managing to take the whole experience to a new level. Their most recent musical offering is stunningly sophisticated\, searingly emotional\, and musically eclectic\, while remaining eminently singalongable. \n  \nTheir live show is a celebration of life\, being alive\, and thriving in these uncertain times. The Guess Who never leave anything less than their hearts on the stage at the end of every performance.

SUMMARY:From the Hills and Hollers: HARLAN COUNTY USA with Jack Wright
DESCRIPTION:About the film \nIn this documentary about labor tension in the coal-mining industry\, director Barbara Kopple films a strike in rural Kentucky. After the coal miners at the Brookside Mine join a union\, the owners refuse the labor contract. Once the miners start to strike\, the owners of the mine respond by hiring scabs to fill the jobs of the regular employees. The strike\, which lasts more than a year\, frequently becomes violent\, with guns produced on both sides\, and one miner is even killed in a conflict. \nAbout the series \nFollowing the success of the 2022-23 series\, we are excited to present the 2nd annual From the Hills and Hollers: Appalachian Stories Film Series. \nThe mission of the series is to connect Athens and the university community to the surrounding region by examining the different ways Appalachia has been represented through film. We seek to develop cultural competency and humility by showing viewers the way both the assets and challenges the region faces have been viewed by those who have the power to represent it on screen. \nShort introduction/lectures will provide context for the film and introduce the underlying issues represented in film and other media. All events in the series are presented with free admission. \nThis screening will take place at the Ridges Auditorium located at 135 Ridges Circle.\nThis series is sponsored by the 2023 Appalachian Studies Association Conference\, Ohio Honors Program\, Center for Campus and Community Engagement\, Multicultural Center\, Black Student Cultural Programming Board\, Hocking Athens Perry Community Action Program\, Athens County Public Libraries\, University Libraries\, Honors Tutorial College\, Center for Advising\, Career\, and Experiential Learning\, OHIO Fellows\, and the Ohio Arts Council.
