SUMMARY:The Castle's Annual Herb Day Luncheon - Featured Herb of the Year: "Coriander/Cilantro"
DESCRIPTION:Today we think of “Cilantro” (aka Coriander) as a flavor used in Mexican cuisine\, but did you know this herb has ancient roots? Evidence of coriander was found in the Egyptian tomb of King Tut\, and in more “recent” history was introduced to the British colonies in North America around the time of 1670. In fact\, coriander was one of the first spices cultivated by early settlers. Enjoy our imaginative take on this classical herb with this tasty luncheon in a wonderful historic setting.

SUMMARY:Cool Hand Luke
DESCRIPTION:The historic Peoples Bank Theatre continues its series of 1967 classic movies on the big screen with Cool Hand Luke \nReserve tickets online \n$8 Adults • $5 Students \n126 min\nPG\n1967 \nPaul Newman was nominated for an Oscar and George Kennedy received one for his work in this allegorical prison drama. Luke Jackson (Paul Newman) is sentenced to a stretch on a southern chain gang after he’s arrested for drunkenly decapitating parking meters. While the avowed ambition of the captain (Strother Martin) is for each prisoner to “get their mind right\,” it soon becomes obvious that Luke is not about to kowtow to anybody. When challenged to a fistfight by fellow inmate Dragline (George Kennedy)\, Luke simply refuses to give up\, even though he’s brutally beaten. Luke knows how to win at poker\, even with bad cards\, by using his smarts and playing it cool. Luke also figures out a way for the men to get their work done in half the usual time\, giving them the afternoon off. Finally\, when Luke finds out his mother has died\, he plots his escape; when he’s caught\, he simply escapes again. Soon\, Luke becomes a symbol of hope and resilience to the other men in the prison camp — and a symbol of rebelliousness that must be stamped out to the guards and the captain. Along with stellar performances by Newman\, Kennedy\, and Martin\, Cool Hand Luke features a superb supporting cast\, including Ralph Waite\, Harry Dean Stanton\, Dennis Hopper\, Wayne Rogers\, and Joe Don Baker as members of the chain gang.

SUMMARY:To End All Wars - Exhibit Opening
DESCRIPTION:The 20th century was one of the most turbulent in the history of the United States. Economic depression\, prohibition against spirituous drink\, industrial advances beyond the imagination and four major conflicts across the world affected nearly every citizen.  Beginning with World War I until the end of the Vietnam War at the end of the century\, men and women stepped forward in support of our governments call for troops to fight in these conflicts.  Washington County was no exception\, supplying not only materials\, but also thousands of men and women. Some gave the ultimate sacrifice.  To End All Wars stands as a modest tribute to those who served. \nThis exhibit at the Campus Martius Museum opens on May 27 and is open until November 11.

SUMMARY:Brown Baggin' Thru History
DESCRIPTION:Guest Speaker: Susan Talbot-Stanaway Topic: World War 1 Posters: For the Hearts and Minds of Ordinary PeoplePres. Woodrow Wilson’s re-election campaign song in 1916 was entitled\, “Elect Wilson\, He Kept Us out of War.” However\, on April 6\, 1917\, at Wilson’s urging\, the United States Congress declared war against Germany. Only a few hours later\, one of Wilson’s most energetic campaign backers\, George Creel\, urged Wilson to develop means to engage the war on the home front through “expression\, not suppression.” The objectives were to unify people of all ages and backgrounds\, including millions of immigrants\, to motivate young men to enlist and women to abandon their traditional roles and become war workers. \nFrom the point of view of Ohio history\, this presentation will describe the posters as works of art and propaganda\, the artists who created them\, how posters established new American heroes and heroines\, and their lasting importance in national history.
