DESCRIPTION:Title:  The Persistence of Memory: Archiving & Presenting Regional History (A Contemporary Mediascape). \nThe monthly meeting of The Multicultural Genealogical Center will be held on Saturday\, June 3\, 1:00 pm. \nThis month’s presenter is Arthur Cromwell who will explain the overall intent of a project that engages OU students in development of documentaries related to historical research.  He will describe the process that has occurred over the past several years collaborating with historians and archivists as well as his extended vision.  Participants will learn of projects that have been completed and those that are currently being researched or are in production and how these projects interconnect.  He is actively seeking ideas about where next efforts should be directed. \nArthur Cromwell has a B.A. (History) from Howard University\, Washington\, DC. He has an M.A. and Ph.D. (Telecommunications)\, Ohio University.  He returned to Howard University for post-graduate studies.  He is now Associate Professor\, School of Media Arts & Studies at Ohio University. He has serves as Director\, Public Media Graduate Program and has worked on digital archival projects for the School of Media Arts & Studies. \nHis work includes the following: he co-produced Memory of the Gathering: The Million Man March and was the associate producer for Black Boy: A Biography of Richard Wright. He was associate producer and researcher for The Trial of Henry Flipper which was broadcast by PBS. He has engaged in numerous other significant projects.  His interests are in African-American history\, film and media history\, Jazz history\, and cultural studies. \nThe event is free (donations to MGC appreciated) and open to the public. Following the program at 2:00 p.m.\, there will be a lunch/social hour.  The Multicultural Genealogical Center is located on Marion Street (the main street in Chesterhill) at the crossroads of Routes 377 and 555.

The Center for Rural Strategies seeks to improve economic and social conditions for rural communities through the creative and innovative use of media and communications. By presenting accurate and compelling portraits of rural lives and cultures\, the center hopes to deepen public debate and create a national environment in which positive change for rural communities can occur. During his presentation\, Mr. Davis will share his experiences\, discuss the current landscape as he sees it and where we can go from here. \nMore about Mr. Davis\nDee has helped design and lead national public information campaigns on topics as diverse as commercial television programming and federal banking policy. \nDee began his media career in 1973 as a trainee at Appalshop\, an arts and cultural center devoted to exploring Appalachian life and social issues in Whitesburg\, Kentucky. As Appalshop’s executive producer\, the organization created more than 50 public TV documentaries\, established a media training program for Appalachian youth\, and launched initiatives that use media as a strategic tool in organization and development. \nDee is the chair of the National Rural Assembly steering committee; he is a member of the Rural Advisory Committee of the Local Initiatives Support Corporation\, Fund for Innovative Television\, and Feral Arts of Brisbane\, Australia. He is also a member of the Institute for Rural Journalism’s national advisory board as well as the advisory board of the Rural Policy Research Institute. Dee is also the former Chair of the board of directors of Mary Reynolds Babcock Foundation. \nExperience Chesterhill on 60 Minute Guided Tour (Optional)\nFrom 10:00 am until 11:00 am you have the option to go on one of three optional tours. You will arrive at the location of your tour and meet with your guide. At 11:00 am you will head to the meeting location at the Chesterhill Produce Auction. Additional tour information is provided on the registration page. \nOption 1: Tour the Chesterhill Produce Auction.\nSince 2004 the Chesterhill Produce Auction has been a cornerstone project of Rural Action’s Sustainable Agriculture program. It has been owned and operated as a social enterprise by Rural Action since 2010. Learn how the 10-acre site has developed over the years and future plans for the site. \nOption 2: Visit a Master Garden in Chesterhill.\nKen and Karen Peters will take you on a tour of their hillside garden nestled between their cottage\, silo and home creating an enclosed garden from the road. This tour offers a preview of the Morgan County Master Gardener’s annual Garden Tour which is to take place the following day. \nOption 3: Learn About Local History at the Multicultural Genealogical Center in Chesterhill. The center which is located on the site of an Underground Railroad stop was created to document and share the contributions of multicultural and multiracial families to the social\, cultural\, political\, religious\, educational and economic development of the Ohio River Valley. \nSustainability Awards\nWe will recognize an individual\, a business\, and a Rural Action partner that: create new models for living with respect to the earth and its systems that others can follow; have a generous spirit and willingly share knowledge\, experiences\, and personal resources with others; and leave the world a better place because of their personal and professional behavior. Additionally\, our board will present a lifetime achievement award during the meeting. As a token of our appreciation\, all recipients will receive a certificate from Rural Action and a handcrafted wooden bowl by John Wood of Homecoming Farm. \nStrategic Plan Update\nOver the past year\, Rural Action’s Board of Directors along with staff have worked to update our Rural Renewal Strategy through 2019. We are pleased to be able to share our vision with you\, highlight important work that is taking place and provide an update on our membership and development goals as we continue working with members and partners to organize our communities for just transition in Appalachian Ohio. \nBusiness Meeting\nA short business meeting will take place during the event led by our Board of Directors. \nActivities for Kids’\nBring the kids\, just make sure to register them! DESCRIPTION:On June 10th\, 2017\, join us for the 2nd annual Appalachia Rising Festival at Solid Ground Farm\, and experience a day of outdoor family fun. Enjoy the new obstacle course and recreation grounds\, a pig roast and farm to table fair featuring locally grown mulberry products\, a local craft beer garden\, live music\, local art\, and great entertainment.  The fun begins at 12pm and goes til dark. Admission is $10/person (proceeds benefit Rising Appalachian Warriors youth programming).  Limited onsite parking is available for a fee. A free shuttle (15 passenger van) will run every 20 minutes from the Athens County Job and Family Services parking lot on 13.

SUMMARY:Rural Landscape Quilt Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Facilitator/Artist Sharon Phillips \nWhen: Saturday\, June 10th from 1-3 p.m. \nDescription: Participants will be introduced to a type of chalk painting that uses the proteins in milk to turn dry pastel chalks into rich mixable paint sticks! Each artist will be supplied with everything needed to create a beautiful fabric folk art landscape. 10X10” squares will become the “pallet” for each person’s rendition of our lovely Southeastern Ohio landscape. After the session the resulting quilt squares will be incorporated into an intriguing full size quilt that will depict the connection between ourselves and our land. \nThis quilt will be displayed at the Village Production’s Quilt Show June 16\, 17 and 18. \nWorkshop is free\, but we will be asking for a $10  donation to be used for the Coolville Elementary’s Art Program.
