Ohio has been processing farm crops and livestock into food and consumer goods since the early 1800s. Dayton processed tobacco in 1810, Cincinnati packed meat in the 1830s, and Akron processed grains into cereal in the 1890s. Today, Ohio’s food processing industry ranks near the top in the United States. Ohio ranks 1st in the production of specialty frozen foods like frozen dinners, pizza, and waffles. Ohio is 2nd in pet food, ketchup and salad dressing production and 4th in cookies, crackers, and soft drinks. (Ohio Department of Agriculture).
