Settlement

Settlers built sturdy log cabins to protect themselves from the weather and from attack by Native Americans. They cut down trees for cabin walls and shaped them to fit together as closely as possible. Gaps were filled with mud plaster. Fences helped keep farm animals from wandering away. The fences also helped protect livestock from wild animals.
