When Africa Balanced Power: Pre-Colonial and Colonial Lessons on Balance of Power, Alliance Formation, and Diplomacy for Reimagining International Relations

October 30, 2025 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Free

The Contemporary History Institute welcomes Dr. Isaac Nunoo for his talk “When Africa Balanced Power.”

Dr. Isaac Nunoo separates international relations from its Western-centric foundations by exploring and incorporating African perspectives on diplomacy, alliance formation, and power balancing. His talk will draw upon case studies from colonial and postcolonial eras to highlight African agency, resilience, and practices, some of which pre-date the Westphalian system. His findings question disciplinary ahistoricism, stress integrated and interdisciplinary approaches, and foster a pluralist conception of global politics that recognizes the epistemologies and experiences of the Global South.

Dr. Isaac Nunoo is a Senior Lecturer in the Centre of African and International Studies at University of Cape Coast, Ghana. His work focuses on foreign policy analysis, security and conflict, and diplomacy within international relations, especially how African states and global actors negotiate and navigate a changing international system.
