ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — Athens County has now had 11,489 total cases of COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic after 560 additional cases were reported Saturday.

The Ohio Department of Health confirmed numbers on Jan. 15, 2022.

According to ODH data, the cases involved 291 people 20-29, 126 people 0-19, 57 people 30-39, 33 people 40-49, 23 people 50-59, 20 people 60-69, seven people 70-79 and three people 80+.

There are 2,552 known active cases in the county as of Saturday and 8,831 recovered cases, according to ODH.

Again, the high number of cases reported Saturday is attributed by ODH to a processing enhancement implemented late Thursday to expand the state’s capacity to process a higher volume of lab results, enabling the backlog to begin to clear and to better keep up with daily processing of positive test results.

A total of 52.53% of the county has started the vaccination process and 48.86% has completed it, according to ODH. There have also been 15,713 additional doses administered.

Anyone experiencing respiratory symptoms is asked to call their primary care physician, urgent care, or emergency department before arriving for care to let them know that they believe they are experiencing symptoms related to COVID-19 virus.
