SUMMARY:Death of a Civil War Hero: The Final Days of Joshua W. Sill
DESCRIPTION:Death of a Civil War Hero: The Final Days of Chillicothean Joshua Woodrow Sill\, featuring historian and author Dan Masters of Perrysburg\, Ohio. \nDan Masters has been actively engaged in Civil War research for 20 years and has written five books and a dozen articles on the subject. His latest book\, Army Life According to Arbaw\, is set for release this spring. His presentation will cover the final week of General Joshua Woodrow Sill’s life through the words of his staff and from the accounts of the men of his brigade. It will discuss in detail his demise on the battlefield of Stones River and chronicle the lengthy return of his body to his hometown of Chillicothe. It’s worth noting that Master’s great-great-great grandfather\, James Morrow\, a Civil War veteran of the 1st Ohio Cavalry\, is buried not far from Sill in Grandview Cemetery. Many of us know about Sill and his death at the Battle of Stone’s river; now we have an opportunity to hear the complete story. (General Sill’s coat will be on display during the program.)

SUMMARY:Earthwork Discoeries In Ross County
DESCRIPTION:An update on new earthwork discoveries in Ross County from old aerial photos and new magnetic surveys featuring Dr. Jarrod Burks\, PhD\, President\, Heartland Earthworks Conservancy and Director of Archaeological Geophysical Survey\, Ohio Valley Archaeology\, Inc.\, Columbus. \nAs you probably know\, Chillicothe and the greater Ross County area were a hub of earthwork construction 1\,600-2\,100 years ago. The Hopewell and Adena constructed hundred of mounds and miles of earthen embankments spread across a few dozen sites with geometric-shaped enclosures\, like Mound City\, Hopewell Mound Group\, and the Junction Group. There are so many earthworks in this part of Ohio that it hardly seems like more could even fit! And yet\, much to our surprise\, a number of new (previously unknown) earthwork sites have recently been discovered in old aerial photos. Join us as renowned archaeologist Dr. Jarrod Burks explores these newly identified ancient earthwork sites and other newly discovered features from ongoing magnetic surveys. There is much yet to learn about Ross County’s ancient past.

SUMMARY:Buy Local or By River: How Early Ohioans Furnished Their Homes
DESCRIPTION:Andrew Richmond\, CEO of Wipak Consulting and Appraisals in Sunbury\, Ohio discusses how people on the Ohio frontier were able to import the goods and furnishings they needed. Contrary to popular belief\, the Ohio frontier was not a remote backwoods devoid of style. Trade via rivers\, lakes\, and later\, the canals\, provided easy access to all manner of goods produced in eastern urban centers and in Europe. While early Ohioans did import great quantities of goods\, they also produced equally great quantities of goods themselves. Using both documentary evidence and surviving objects\, Andrew Richmond will examine the wide range of goods both made and used on the Ohio frontier and how trade networks and consumer choice played key roles in the furnishing of frontier homes.
