DESCRIPTION:Something suspicious is happening on the rails in the Hocking Valley — and you might just get swept into the mystery before you even board the train. \nFor one day only\, on Saturday\, Sept. 6\, passengers on the 1 p.m. Hocking Valley Scenic Railway ride will be welcomed at the Nelsonville depot by live characters from ABC Players’ upcoming production of Agatha Christie’s “Murder on the Orient Express.” \nPlease note: The characters will not be aboard the train. The interactive experience takes place only at the depot\, prior to departure. \nStarting at noon\, guests will have the chance to meet the famous detective Hercule Poirot and a host of suspicious personalities — each with secrets to hide and possibly a motive to kill. Visitors are encouraged to interact with the characters\, snap photos\, and enjoy this rare collaboration between two of Nelsonville’s most beloved cultural institutions. \nThe event precedes the 1 p.m. East Logan Round Trip\, a family-friendly\, 22-mile journey that lasts approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes. The vintage train winds along a 156-year-old route\, offering scenic views of the Hocking River\, glimpses of Lock No. 19 from the old Hocking Canal\, and local industry sites. \nAdapted by Ken Ludwig\, “Murder on the Orient Express” follows the brilliant detective Poirot as he solves a chilling murder aboard a glamorous train filled with secrets and suspects. DESCRIPTION:The ABC Players invite audiences to close out their 2024–2025 season with a riotous romp through romance\, deception and delightful chaos with a staged reading of The French Have a Word for It on Sunday\, July 13\, at 2 p.m. at the historic Stuart’s Opera House. \nA masterclass in mistaken identities and marital mayhem\, this witty French farce centers around a flirtatious wife who vows to remain faithful—so long as her husband does. When a scheme to expose his fidelity (or lack thereof) spirals wildly out of control\, the stage fills with outraged husbands\, watchful wives\, bumbling bellboys\, seductive schemers\, and increasingly confused police inspectors. In a whirlwind of secret rendezvous\, no one—not even the audience—is quite sure who ends up in bed with whom. \n“My character\, Maria Soldignac\, is the root cause of all the marital problems in this farce\,” Celeste Parsons\, one of the actors\, said. “Maria is a Spanish woman with whom Lucienne’s husband had a brief but intense fling in Madrid. Maria accompanies her husband on a business trip to Paris and makes a passionate bid to renew the affair during the seven days of the trip. When Lucienne is encouraged to witness the liaison\, fireworks erupt.” \nKeeping up with the fun of the farce\, Celeste Parsons is also being joined on stage with her real-life husband\, Jim\, who plays Ernest Redillon\, a sort of playboy in his early 30s who has always been in love with Lucienne\, his best friend’s wife. \n“Lucienne suspects her husband of infidelity and declares that\, if she finds out for sure\, she will avenge herself by having her own affair\,” Jim Parsons explained. “Another woman\, in similar circumstances\, makes the same vow. Both women show up at Redillon’s home to enact their vengeance on their unfaithful husbands. But Redillon has just spent eleven hours in bed with a substitute for Lucienne\, and he is in no condition to meet the expectations of the two ladies who have come to him for their vengeance.” \nWritten by Georges Feydeau and translated by Barnett Shaw\, this staged reading\, directed by Alexa Ross\, offers a unique glimpse into the mechanics of classic farce\, with all the humor and high energy of a full production\, brought vividly to life by a talented local cast. \n“I saw my first French farce right after college\, on a scholarship with the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco\, George Feydeau’s ‘A Flea In Her Ear\,’ costumes and set all in black and white\,” Ross explained. “Researching plays at OU’s Alden Library\, I found another forgotten gem by the same playwright to share with this community. As she travels through Wonderland\, she encounters all of the iconic characters that audiences have come to love including the ever-tardy White Rabbit\, the grinning Cheshire Cat\, a cool Caterpillar\, the wacky Mad Hatter and the hot-tempered Queen of Hearts. \nAdapted from the classic Disney animated film and the Lewis Carroll stories\, the show features Disney favorites such as I’m Late\, The Unbirthday Song\, and Painting the Roses Red along with brand-new songs\, including music from the 2010 live-action film. \nAlthough the story and production are of fantastical feats\, one might argue that the true fantastical feat is the growth ABC Players Jr. has seen over the course of 10 years. \nEach year\, the number of young actors auditioning and wanting to be part of the productions has grown\, with this year having 57 kids in total on stage. In addition to attracting new performers\, the retention of kids who have been with the organization since they first started producing Jr. shows has been incredible\, with seven seniors performing in their last Jr. show before graduating. \n“Being a part of ABC Players has been such an important part of my life for so many years\,” said Eden Radcliff\, who plays Alice and has been part of the Jr. productions for the past 10 years. “It feels weird to think that I’m graduating but this show feels like a perfect show to end this chapter. I’m so grateful for all the memories\, friendships and lessons I’ve gained here\, and I’ll carry them with me wherever I go next.” \nThe abundance of participation is a testament to the welcoming\, fun and educational environment that directors Jodi MacNeal and Jenn Fritchley bring into the theater. As she travels through Wonderland\, she encounters all of the iconic characters that audiences have come to love including the ever-tardy White Rabbit\, the grinning Cheshire Cat\, a cool Caterpillar\, the wacky Mad Hatter and the hot-tempered Queen of Hearts. \nAdapted from the classic Disney animated film and the Lewis Carroll stories\, the show features Disney favorites such as I’m Late\, The Unbirthday Song\, and Painting the Roses Red along with brand-new songs\, including music from the 2010 live-action film. \nAlthough the story and production are of fantastical feats\, one might argue that the true fantastical feat is the growth ABC Players Jr. has seen over the course of 10 years. \nEach year\, the number of young actors auditioning and wanting to be part of the productions has grown\, with this year having 57 kids in total on stage. In addition to attracting new performers\, the retention of kids who have been with the organization since they first started producing Jr. shows has been incredible\, with seven seniors performing in their last Jr. show before graduating. \n“Being a part of ABC Players has been such an important part of my life for so many years\,” said Eden Radcliff\, who plays Alice and has been part of the Jr. productions for the past 10 years. “It feels weird to think that I’m graduating but this show feels like a perfect show to end this chapter. I’m so grateful for all the memories\, friendships and lessons I’ve gained here\, and I’ll carry them with me wherever I go next.” \nThe abundance of participation is a testament to the welcoming\, fun and educational environment that directors Jodi MacNeal and Jenn Fritchley bring into the theater. Featuring original music by Tony- and eight-time Oscar winner\, Alan Menken (Newsies\, Beauty and the Beast\, Little Shop of Horrors)\, this uplifting musical was nominated for five Tony Awards\, including Best Musical. \nWhen disco diva\, Deloris Van Cartier\, witnesses a murder\, she is put in protective custody in the one place the cops are sure she won’t be a found: a convent! Disguised as a nun\, she finds herself at odds with both the rigid lifestyle and uptight Mother Superior. Using her unique disco moves and singing talent to inspire the choir\, Deloris breathes new life into the church and community but\, in doing so\, blows her cover. Soon\, the gang is giving chase\, only to find them up against Deloris and the power of her newly found sisterhood. \nThis show was ready to open two years ago\, just as everything shut down for the pandemic\, so our amazing cast has been practicing songs and dance moves for two years.  This show will touch your heart and make you happy! \nEFFECTIVE NOVEMBER 1ST\, 2021\, Stuart’s Opera House will require proof of full vaccination ONLY. This requirement is for all audience\, staff\, volunteers\, special event staff\, and performers ages 12 and over. In addition to this change\, all guests will be required to stay fully masked within all Stuart’s Opera House spaces. If you do not have a mask\, one will be provided for you. Children between the ages of 5-11 (those currently unable to receive a vaccination) will be required to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken 72 hours or less prior to attending any event at Stuart’s Opera House. This could be a rapid\, PCR or an at-home test (no video-proctored electronic result required for those 5-11 years old). All children under 12 will need to arrive with a parent\, legal guardian or adult who can confirm the negative test. Children under 5 do not need to show a negative test result; however\, we still highly recommend that you have your kids tested if possible.
