Often considered part of the genre’s “Big Bang\,” the Carter Family’s remarkable sixteen-year career left an enduring mark on American musical history.\n\n\n\nThrough live music\, storytelling\, and historical insight\, Steve and Lisa Ball will trace the group’s journey—from their formation and landmark audition at the famed Bristol Sessions to their rise to national prominence and the challenges that brought their career to an unexpected close at its peak.\n\n\n\nThe program also highlights the rich history behind many of the Carter Family’s songs\, several of which originated in the mid-19th century. DESCRIPTION:It’s playtime at The Nest!\n\nBreak the routine\, get out of the house and come let your little ones play in a fresh space while you get to talk with other grown-ups for awhile!\n\nCome and go as you please anytime during our open play hours.  Toys and activities are geared towards babies and toddlers but older siblings are welcome to come along.\n\nWhile you’re here\, peruse the lending library of books\, DVDs and even baby carriers free to borrow!\n\nTuesdays masks are optional\, while Thursdays are mask-only for those who prefer a “mask-on” environment.\n\nDisinfectant wipes are always available and we have a tub for toys that have been “mouthed” so they can be washed before future use.\n\nA changing table and toddler potty are available as well as a bottle warmer and fridge for storing formula/milk.

DESCRIPTION:Sandy Plunkett Book Signing \nThe Southeast Ohio History Center is sponsoring a book signing event with Athens-based artist and comics writer\, Sandy Plunkett on Thursday\, July 30th from 5:30pm until 7pm in conjunction with the release of his recently released book A Brush with History\, a 35-year Retrospective of his Southeast Ohio related art. \nPlunkett\, who had been a New York based artist drawing for DC\, Marvel Comics\, and others relocated to Southeast Ohio decades ago and found his sketchbook filling with drawings of this regions rural landscape and buildings. His trademark look began appearing on posters\, album covers\, t-shirts and in political cartoons. Many of these works were on exhibit at the Southeast Ohio History Center in the last few years. Then\, fast-forward to Boots Riley’s 2018 sci-fi satirical directing debut Sorry to Bother You\, following a telemarketer who uses his telephonic “white voice” to climb capitalism’s twisted ladder. \nCome for the biting social commentary\, stay for the absurdist comedy. The system is rigged — dub your way in! \nAbout Putney Swope \nIn this classic 1969 satire written and directed by Robert Downey Sr\, a black executive – Putney Swope – of a Madison Avenue advertising agency is accidentally made chairman of the board of directors when a boardroom vote goes awry. Seeing an opportunity to shake things up\, Swope renames the agency “Truth & Soul Inc”\, fires his white co-workers\, and brings on-board a host of radical black activists to try and turn the advertising world on its head with subversive and shock-inducing ad campaigns. While the effort makes Truth & Soul highly profitable\, Swope and his cohort end up drawing the ire of the President and are declared a threat to national security. \n  \nAbout Sorry to Bother You \nIn his directorial debut\, self-proclaimed communist and filmmaker Boots Riley presents an alternate reality set in Oakland\, California where Cassius Green\, a telemarketer who is floundering in his job and struggling with the existential crisis of being black and selling to white people. When a long-time fellow employee advises him to try using his “white voice” instead\, Green suddenly finds huge success selling abhorrent-though-lucrative products to Caucasian customers. Meanwhile\, Green’s co-workers are organizing a union to try and improve their less-than-favorable working conditions. As Green watches his success begin to erode his old sense-of-self\, he has a crisis of conscience when his boss tries to recruit him for a nefarious plan.
