DESCRIPTION:This past year there have been multiple stories of white people calling the police on African Americans that they thought were dangerous or threatening to their location\,\nfrom Starbucks to Athens County\, from a person knocking on a door to someone acting strangely (from a diabetic reaction.) Why does this happen? What can be the consequences for someone once they are jailed for even a low level misdemeanor? Please join us for our monthly general meeting. \nThis month\, we will watch and discuss Whose Streets. Whose Streets is a documentary told by activists and leaders about the uprising in Ferguson\, Missouri after the unarmed Black teenager\, Michael Brown\, was shot and killed by police. You are welcome to bring a dish to share and a collection will be taken up to go to support performance artist John Sims. Child care will be provided and will include age-appropriate social justice activities.

DESCRIPTION:A new southeast Ohio chapter of the national organization\, Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ) will hold its first meeting on February 28th from 7-9pm at the Christ Lutheran Church on Mill St. in Athens. During the meeting\, attendees will learn about SURJ’s mission and strategies and how to become engaged in issues of racial inequality and white privilege. \nThe group aims to mobilize white people behind a multiracial movement. By addressing privilege\, SURJ intends to make white people more accountable to the struggle for racial justice and equality. \nSome people are not sure how they can help end racism\, but SURJ feels that it can be a starting point for those who may feel lost. \nJohn Schmieding\, member of the SURJ steering committee\, has hope that people will find a way to make a difference. \n“Lots of us who are white are concerned about racism and wondering what we can do. Here is a chance to be part of a group working together to see what kind of difference we can make.” \n
