As part of a state-wide project to eliminate voter fraud, workers at the Washington County Board of Elections recently double-checked the status of all registered voters.

Deputy Directory Peggy Byers says voter information was cross-matched with Social Security Numbers and Bureau of Motor Vehicles Information.

The board of elections was able to catch some problems while completing this project.

"We ended up with about 1,000 'no matches' and so we actually had to check some other sources and in some cases we wrote letters to the voters themselves to get some data confirmed," said Byers.

Byers says she believes the problem of voter fraud is decreasing.

"I think it's getting better and better all the time because the state keeps all of our databases up on a continuing basis now. We put somebody in and it moves immediately to the state. The problem has to be getting somewhat eliminated."

The Washington County Board of Elections completed the project in about a month.
