“An Appalachian Christmas Carol” Returns To Stuart’s Opera House
< < Back to appalachian-christmas-carolBrick Monkey Theater Ensemble, Southeast Ohio’s professional theater company, is presenting An Appalachian Christmas Carol, Dec. 17-21 at Stuart’s Opera House in Nelsonville.
Now in its third year, the production of this new–and newly relevant to our region–adaptation of the Charles Dickens Christmas classic is written by company member Merri Biechler.
The production is the culmination of three years of development and research that included extensive community input.
Spinning the traditional ghost story and tale of redemption, An Appalachian Christmas Carol honors Southeast Ohio’s rich coal mining and labor union heritage, while simultaneously celebrating the spirit of the season.
Brick Monkey Theater Ensemble takes this beloved classic and moves it to our own backyard: a Southeast Ohio Mining Town where old Eb Scrooge owns the mine. It’s a story of redemption, rooted in rural storytelling and intertwined with regional traditional music.
For this production, Stuart’s Opera House is as much a character as a performance venue, and was chosen for its vibrant past and its intimate connection to the history of the region.
Brick Monkey Theater Ensemble is supported by the Ohio Arts Council, the Athens Foundation, the Kleinpenny Educational Fund, the Puffin Foundation, the Athens County Convention and Visitors Bureau and the O’Bleness Foundation.
Show times are 7 p.m. on Dec. 17-18, 8 p.m. Dec. 19-20 and 2 p.m. on Dec. 21. Tickets are $18 for adults, $15 for seniors, $12 per child and are available at www.stuartsoperahouse.org.
