‘Why Does My Field Guide Keep Changing?’ with Kyle Brooks

April 4, 2017 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Join the Athens Area Birders for our free monthly program with Kyle Brooks:

“As the years go by, our field guides continue to change. Bird names change, some species get lumped together or split apart, and the order in which they are presented gets moved around. Most birders accept these changes without a second thought, but why exactly do these things happen? In this presentation, we will be exploring the concept of speciation, what exactly defines a species, how and why birds are named, and why some species get shuffled around or change their name. In addition, we will be exploring some potential future changes to a few familiar species, such as how the White-Breasted Nuthatch might soon become 3 new species or how the Yellow-Rumped Warbler will become 2 new species.”
