CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice has amended his ban on outdoor burning to add an exclusion that would allow certain fires at federal and state recreation areas.

A statement by Justice’s office says that the Monday addition was at the request of officials with the state’s Division of Forestry and Division of Natural Resources.

The exclusion allows fires within fireplaces or fire rings at designated federal and state recreation areas, provided area managers have authority to continue the open burning ban within designated areas.

Other exclusions include fires needed for chemical production, commercial land-clearing efforts, training fires, commercial outdoor cooking and liquid-fueled gas fire stoves, grills and lanterns.

The release said the ban is necessary because of drought conditions and some reduced water supply levels.
