The Ohio University Deputy Chief of Police has been placed on paid adminstrative leave.

Police Chief Andrew Powers says Mark Mathews has been on leave since December 8.

"He will remain on leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation into allegations of misconduct," says Powers.

University officials will not say what type of misconduct is being investigated.

Mathews held the post of Interim Police Chief in May of 2006 after Tony Camechis retired.

According to a university news release sent out at that time, Mathews is originally from Toledo, Ohio.

He was hired at Ohio University as a patrol officer in May 1992 before being promoted to assistant chief of police in December 2002, assistant director in December 2003 and associate director in August 2004.

Mathews earned his bachelor's degree in criminology from Ohio University in 1992.
