Serena Warner, a home-schooled 13-year-old playing multiple sports, didn’t expect to be a Bobcat, or even a volleyball player, until six short years ago. However today Warner is considered an essential entity to Ohio volleyball.

Coach Theis described his first impression of Warner in four adjectives: “Competitive, intelligent, articulate and mature.”

Born and raised in Houston, Warner began playing for the Texas Tornados Homeschool Team and the Texas Pride Volleyball Club. Her senior season she averaged 10 kills and eight blocks per match. Also in 2010, Warner was placed on the AVCA Under Armour Watch List.

Upon coming to Ohio for volleyball, Warner also joined the track team as a two-sport athlete. In addition to making high jump her freshman year, Warner also saw the floor in nine volleyball matches.

“She has a much better understanding of the game,” Coach Theis remarked on her growth over the past two years, “She is always learning to hit harder and block better.”

In a recent interview Coach Theis referred to Warner as a “real offensive threat.” In response to being recognized as such an established sophomore, Warner merely wants to work harder.

“It makes me want to perform well for my team and provide good offense every game. It’s all about being efficient and looking for opportunities to score,” she said.

When asked about the season thus far and what lies ahead in the MAC, Warner replied, “That was just preseason. We need to come focused to every game because they’re all good in the MAC.”

When asked about the rest of college, Warner smiled optimistically; she wants what every college athlete wants, “To walk away with three MAC championships and good performances in NCAA tournaments.”

Coach Theis agreed saying, “I would like to see her walk away with several conference championships and division titles.”

Given the opportunity to talk about her post-college plans and whether or not she would ever consider coaching, Warner joked, “I’m just working on this week.”

Ohio begins conference play this weekend at Bowling Green Saturday and Miami of Ohio Sunday. The Bobcats hope they continue to see great things from Warner this coming weekend and for the remainder of her time at Ohio.
