On Tuesday, Glouster Village Council initially planned to vote on appointing a new police chief, but because of a lack of important documents, the decision was postponed.

Mayor Miles Wolf says candidate Jay Barrett still needed to complete a medical physical before he could be appointed.

Instead, Wolf announced that he was reinstating Officer Lucas Mace.

Mace was placed on paid administrative leave in early March, after being the subject of a state criminal investigation.

The incident in question involved an alleged theft in late February, but Mace denied the charge at the meeting.

When the decision to reinstate Mace was announced, some community members at the meeting were shocked and angry.

The council cited the fact that for three weeks, the town has only had one police officer on duty as a reason for the reinstatement.

Chuck Wood, a Glouster resident, says he remains very optimistic, and approves of the direction his community is heading.

“I’ve seen more community involvement recently, than I’ve seen in the last 15 years,” said Wood.

Mayor Wolf says he hoped the paperwork for prospective potential police chief Jay Barrett would be completed within two weeks.

At that time, council will vote on Barrett’s appointment.
