SUMMARY:Discovering History: "Traveler's Guide to Ancient Ohio" with John Hancock
DESCRIPTION:This compact\, richly illustrated\, in-depth travel guide takes visitors to the many Indigenous earthwork wonders of southern Ohio\, including the brilliant landscape monuments recently added to the UNESCO World Heritage list. It is the first publication to present these amazing places from a traveler’s perspective—as rewarding architectural experiences\, with deeply informative site descriptions\, plus curated routes to historical\, scenic\, and natural treasures across the region. Archaeological\, historical\, and Indigenous knowledge enriches the text\, assembled by the author over many years of collaborative work. Route and trail descriptions coordinate with all new maps\, photographs\, interview excerpts\, and site orientation videos.\n\nProfessor Hancock will recount the 30-year story of how this project came about—the vision for a curated\, regional approach to Ohio’s brilliant American Indian earthworks—and describe how this book showcases southern Ohio’s rich and surprising layers of cultural heritage for both armchair and on-site travelers.\n\nThis event is sponsored by the Washington County Public Library\, is FREE and open to the public\, and will be livestreamed/recorded on our YouTube Channel @CampusMartiusMuseum.
