Trial Date Set For Redistricting Case
< < Back toAn Ohio judge has set January trial on the constitutionality of holding an election while a GOP map of new congressional districts remains in limbo, but the issue could be moot by that time.
The Clermont County judge scheduled the trial more than a month after a Democratic coalition must submit signatures to qualify for a 2012 ballot challenge to the map.
U.S. House districts must be redrawn every 10 years, and a Republican voter has questioned the constitutionality of holding next year's election without a new map in place.
A lawyer representing lawmakers says the disputed map, passed in September, will take effect if Democrats don't gather enough signatures. That would eliminate the suit's target.
The coalition's lawyer says an earlier trial would be a waste of court time.
