How do you celebrate a 145th birthday?

At West Virginia University on Tuesday, try bowling for $1.45 per game. Or hit the Side Pocket Pub for the $1.45 hot dog and fries combo.

To celebrate, the university is also dishing up free cake at the Mountainlair for students, faculty and staff.

WVU was "born" Feb. 7, 1867, under the federal Morrill Land-Grant College Act of 1862.

It granted federally owned land to states that agreed to build colleges to teach agriculture and the mechanical arts.

In October 1863, the Legislature accepted a grant of land totaling 150,000 acres, and funds from the sale of that land helped build WVU.
