Parkersburg-area tourism officials say the region has seen an increase in visitors in the last couple years, a rebound from the dip caused by the national economic downturn that started in 2008.

Greater Parkersburg Convention and Visitors Bureau president Steve Nicely says that the Mid-Ohio Valley came off "an extremely successful year" in 2011, with increased hotel and motel occupancy.

The closure of what had been the area's main draw, Fenton Art Glass, has prompted a decrease in tour-bus visitors, but the bureau is hoping the overall tourism upswing will continue in 2012.

Nicely's group is involved in several events this year, including Thunder Road Madness, a motorcycle event at S&P Harley Davidson in Williamstown, and a fall event that highlights the area's history.
