Softball: Ohio Splits Doubleheader With Western Michigan< < Back to
Ohio split a doubleheader with Western Michigan on Sunday. The Bobcats lost the first game 5-0 and won the second game 4-0.
Starting pitcher Meredith Whitney struck out 11 for Western Michigan as the Broncos took game one of the double header against Ohio.
What started as a pitchers duel quickly turned into a rout for Western Michigan. Bobcats starting pitcher Lauren McClary took a no-hitter into the sixth, but Courtney Rousseau and Elishia Handshoe both homered in the inning to put the Broncos up 3-0.
Christina Pigozzi and Diana Patterson added RBI singles in the sixth and seventh respectively for Western Michigan, to make the score 5-0.
Whitney was dominant for the Broncos, pitching a complete game two-hitter without giving up a walk.
Despite unhittable stuff from Whitney, Ohio had plenty of chances to extend their winning streak to 3, but could not take advantage. The Bobcats were 1-5 with runners in scoring position.
In the fourth inning, Ohio had runners at second and third with no outs. However, Whitney struck out two and forced a ground out to end the inning.
In the second game, McClary redeemed herself, pitching a shutout for her third win of the weekend.
Ohio did all of its damage in the fourth inning of game two. Adrienne Gebele was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Alex Basquez. Dakota Pyles then reached base on a fielder’s choice, scoring Lauren Gellerman.
Raven King went on to score Ohio’s third run of the inning off of a Western Michigan error. For the final run of the inning, Jillian Van Wagnen singled through the right side to score Giusti.
The rest of the game was scoreless for both teams. McClary recorded five strikeouts in the game.
Ohio (19-24, 8-6 MAC) takes on Dayton on Tuesday.
