Another Reduction In Ironton Police Staff
< < Back toJust a few months after one Southeast Ohio city lost half a dozen officers to layoffs, its police chief is leaving, too.
This time, it's not because of budget cuts, it's to retirement.
Ironton Police Chief Jim Carey retired Monday afternoon.
A lot of that time was spent doing more than just the duties of a typical police chief.
Earlier this year, budget cuts forced the layoff of half a dozen officers and cut business hours to just one day a week.
Carey says the employees that are left are the best of the best, but they're still limited by finances.
With Carey's retirement, the police department will be down another position.
The mayor says there's no chance of a replacement until January.
