Athens Increasing Water Rates In 2013

Athens residents will see their water bills go up after January 1st.
In a press release the city said the 3% rate hike will go towards covering increased labor, equipment, and supply costs.
The increase will also cover the replacement of aging water meters and distribution lines.
The release also said a second phase of improvements to the water system in the coming years.
The city said the increase is part of a plan for smaller rate increases over a period of time to help "avoid cumbersome debt loads".
