Ohio.com reported Thursday that Akron starting point guard Alex Abreu has been arrested and is being held in the Summit County Jail on marijuana trafficking charges.

Abreu was arrested Thursday afternoon by Akron police narcotics officers, but the police have not given details of the arrest yet.

The junior point guard has been a leader on the team, averaging 10.3 points and 6.0 assists this season. Against the Bobcats, his numbers have skyrocketed, going to 18.5 points and 9.0 assists.

He has been suspended indefinitely, which is a huge loss for the Zips, as the Mid-American Conference Tournament begins on Monday. The Zips are the No. 1 seed in the tournament and do not play until next Friday, though.

As the No. 2 seed, Ohio would not meet Akron in the tournament unless the two made it to the MAC Championship, which several analysts are predicting.

The backup point guards to Abreu are Carmelo Betancourt and Deji Ibitayo. Betancourt, a freshman, has averaged 9.4 minutes, 1.8 points and 1.4 assists this season. His inexperience in the starting lineup could lead coach Keith Danbrot to lean towards playing Ibitayo, a sophomore guard who averages just 11.2 minutes, 3.1 points and 0.7 assists.

Akron plays Kent State Friday in the James A. Rhodes Arena at 7 p.m. Their tournament play starts next Friday at 6:30 p.m. in the Quicken Loans Arena and the Bobcats have an opportunity to meet Akron for one final time this season in Cleveland for the MAC Championship on Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
