A public hearing is set on a plan to widen a nearly 4-mile stretch of Interstate 64 in Putnam County.

The state Division of Highways will conduct the meeting May 20 at Rock Branch Elementary School in Nitro.

Under the plan, two lanes will be added to the four-lane section of I-64 between Exit 39 at Crooked Creek and just east of Exit 45 at Nitro. On each side of that section are six lanes of interstate.

Highways spokesman Brent Walker says the project also would likely involve building a new bridge over the Kanawha River.

Walker says it could be five to 10 years before work begins on the project, which is part of a five-year statewide transportation improvement plan.
