Ohio Athletic Conference play didn’t get off to the right start for Marietta as the Pioneers fell to Hedielberg 2-0.

The game started out evenly as Heidelberg only edged Marietta in shots 5-2 with senior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Pearse making four saves. In addition, the Student Princes only earned three corners to Marietta’s two. Both squads went into the half scoreless.

It looked as if extra time was a possibility during the beginning of the second half, but Heidelberg proceeded to open the floodgates.

Freshman defender Natalie Bennet broke the draw with a 64th-minute shot past Pearse, the first goal of her collegiate career.

Sophomore defender Jeanette Jinkinson doubled her squad’s lead in the 73rd minute, picking up her first goal of the season.

The Student Princes picked up their offensive productivity in the second half, firing off 10 shots; the Pioneers only registered two. Heidelberg won the corner kick battle 6-1 in the second half.

Marietta (2-8, 0-1) will have to wait until it hosts Mount Union on Tuesday to pick up its first OAC victory.
