Ohio Swimming And Diving Dominates Marshall

The Ohio swimming and diving team ruled the waters of the Aquatic Center on Nov. 8 against Marshall as it finished with a final score of 197 to the Thundering Herd’s 81.
To start the meet off was the 200-yard individual medley relay that was taken by an Ohio team of Rachel Stearns, Tori Bagan, Casey Papp, and Josie Barker with a time of 1:46.47. Earning second was Haley Clark, Hannah Shin, Steph Gyurke, and Carrie Dukes as they touched the wall 1:50.62 after leaving the blocks.
Next was Laurin Williams and Bianca Hauzer who took the first two places in the 1000-yard freestyle with 10:19.75 and 10:20.88 respectively. This event added 13 more points to the ‘Cats’ total score.
Rachel Stearns clocked in with a 1:54.41 in the 200-yard freestyle and followed by Ohio teammate Clark who managed to touch the wall two short seconds after. In fourth place for the same event was Ariel Hodges with a 2:02.22.
The next event put the swimmers on their backs as Ohio again walked away with a sweep. In first place was Addy Ferguson with a 57.04 and fellow teammates Myriah Ariza-Balter and Kelse Johnson with not even a second separating the two.
Keeping with the 100-yards, the breaststroke was next. Bagan finished with a 1:05.65 in first and followed by teammate Hannah Shin just three seconds later. Coming in at fourth with a time of 1:10.81 was Sara Sams. The three would earn 15 more points to the Bobcats total.
The 200-yard butterfly was led by Marshall’s Sarah Kay with a time of 2:05.07, but on her tail were Ohio’s Michelle Gasior and Dukes. They would finish with times of 2:08.74 and a 2:10.27, respectively.
The shortest event of the afternoon was next as swimmers readied themselves on the blocks. Papp took first place for the Bobcats in the 50-yard freestyle with a 24.9 and was followed by Barker just .02 seconds later. Ohio’s Lauren Steele earned fourth place for the event as she clocked in with a time of 25.91.
Increasing the distance by 50, the next event was the 100-yard freestyle. The Bobcats took the top three places as another .02 seconds separated the first and second place finishers. Hauzer finished with a 53.38 and close behind her was Casey Papp at 53.40. Next to touch the wall was Ariza-Balter with 55.7 seconds.
Ohio’s Rachel Stearns won the tenth event as she finished the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:05.02. Following her teammate was Sams in third place with a 2:23.05 finish time.
Bagan earned another nine points for the Bobcat total as she came in first with 2:24.44 in the 200-yard breaststroke.
Williams was the only one to earn points for the Bobcats in the 500-yard freestyle as she managed to reach the wall after 5:08.9 of swimming.
Next on the event agenda was the 100-yard butterfly that was taken by Carrie Dukes and her 57.09 finish. Marshall’s Sarah Kay and Chloe Parsemain would take the next two places, denying the ‘Cats of any more points.
Rachel Stearns helped out the Bobcats with her 2:09.32 finish in the 200-yard IM but three other Marshall swimmers would separate her and Ariel Hodges. Hodges finished with a time of 2:16.14 in fifth.
The final race for the swimmers was 200-yard freestyle relay. A team made up of Clark, Barker, Bagan and Papp finished first with a time of 1:37.06. The two other Ohio teams would be kept out of placing by a Marshall team earning second in 1:44.5.
The Bobcats swept the 3-meter dive, as Kristin Capcik took first with a 327.38 and Haleigh Bartlett scoring a 315.6 in second. The following two places would also be awarded to the Green and White as Morgan Srail finished with a 289.65 and MaryRose Hillstrom earning fourth.
Capcik walked out of the 1-meter dive with first place and a towering score of 295.8. There was more than a 100-point margin between Capcik and the other finishers of this event.
The Bobcats followed with a trip to Columbus on Nov. 9 to swim against Ohio State.
