Georgetown College Rolls Over RedStorm, 101-78

The Rio Grande RedStorm women’s basketball team dropped its second conference game in a row Saturday when it fell to the No. 5 Georgetown College Tigers 101-78 at Davis-Reid Alumni Gym. The RedStorm are now 12-4 overall and 1-3 in the Mid-South Conference.

Sophomore forward Sarah Bonar led the RedStorm with a team-high 26 points. Bonar was also 8-of-9 from the free throw line. She shot 50 percent from the field and lifted her season average to 18.56 points per game. The RedStorm’s next leading scorer was freshman forward Alexis Payne with 11 points. Payne also added a team-high 11 rebounds. MSC leading scorer Brianna Thomas was held to just 10 points on 3-of-15 shooting from the field. Thomas averages 19.25 points per game on the season.

Rio Grande shot just 14.29 percent from the 3-point line finishing the game at 2-for-14 from beyond the arc. The RedStorm’s bench outscored Georgetown College 22-12.

After a back-and-forth first half, Rio Grande found itself trailing by only five points at halftime. But the nationally-ranked Tigers came out firing in the second half. The Tigers would outscore the RedStorm 60-42 in the second half en route to a 101-78 final score.

Georgetown College doubled Rio Grande’s assist totals, finishing with 16 assists to Rio’s eight. The Tigers also held a large advantage in field goal shooting. Georgetown College shot 42.6 percent from the field with Rio Grande finishing at 35. 2 percent on the day.

Georgetown College senior guard Andrea Howard proved to be too much for the RedStorm to handle on defense. Howard finished with a game-high 34 points on 52.4 percent shooting from the floor. The senior was also connecting from long range, hitting five 3-pointers on only eight attempts. Senior guard Kourtney Tyra was not far behind Howard for the Tigers. Tyra tallied 29 points while shooting a staggering 72.7 percent from the floor. The senior was also 9-10 from the free throw line.

The RedStorm return home for their next matchup. Rio will look to return to its winning ways when it takes on conference opponent Shawnee State on Jan. 11. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
