Ohio Wrestling’s Phil Wellington has high expectations for himself and the rest of the Ohio wrestlers as the MAC regular season comes to a close.

“We’ve been training really hard and now we’re training smart. And we have a lot of potential especially in our young guys and our light guys,” Wellington said.

Wellington, the redshirt sophomore, was one of five Ohio wrestlers who were invited to the NCAA tournament last season and Wellington expects to be back again this year.

“I expect big things out of this team at MAC’s,” Wellington said. “I think we can qualify six or seven guys to the NCAA tournament,” he added.

Wrestling in the 197 lbs. weight class, Wellington was undefeated through conference competition and has been ranked in the top-15 in the country for his respective weight class for much of the year.

With the MAC Championship just under two weeks away, Wellington continues to prep whether it is during practice or off the mats.

“I’ve been studying myself more this year… I’ve been watching my matches, seeing where I made my mistakes, I try to correct them in the wrestling room,” Wellington said.

The MAC Championship starts Saturday, March 8, in Kent, Oh.
