The No. 12 Marietta Pioneers (5-1) defeated the College of Wooster Scots 4-2 on a benefit of a two-run inning and five wild pitches.

The second inning was a big one for the Pioneers. Chris Winpigler got Marietta its first run of the day with an RBI single that scored Josh Ungerbuehler, who advanced to second on wild pitch during the at-bat. Winpigler followed that up by scoring on one of Buckingham’s five wild pitches.

Clint Roche scored another Pioneer run in the fifth on a fielder’s choice. But Wooster started to make a comeback when they struck for two runs and chased Tyler Nieberding, the eventual winning pitcher, from the mound after 5 1/3 innings.

However reliever Mike Fulton came in and pitched 3 2/3 innings of perfect baseball with six strikeouts. Fulton’s pitching, with an insurance run in the seventh, helped preserve the victory for the Pioneers.

Chris Winpigler had a big day at the plate, going 2 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

The pitching staff also had a big game for the Pioneers. Fulton and Nieberding gave up just three hits and two runs, with only one earned. They also struck out a combined seven hitters.

The Marietta Pioneers will have a day off Wednesday before returning for a doubleheader against Montclair State and Webster University on Thursday.
