West Virginia's unemployment rate inched up in March to 6.1 percent.

The seasonally adjusted rate is up two-tenths of a percentage point from February. WorkForce West Virginia reported Tuesday that the number of unemployed state residents rose by 1,200 in March to a total of 48,500 statewide.

The West Virginia rate is less than the national rate of 6.7 percent.

Employment gains in West Virginia were recorded in logging, construction and manufacturing. They were offset by declines in the financial sector, government and educational and health services.
