After starting the season off with a late-game loss to Fairfield Union in Week 2, the New Lexington Panthers were hoping to bounce back at home against Maysville. However, Maysville’s misdirection offense and swarming defense were too much for New Lexington, as Maysville walked away with a 43-7 victory.

After a sloppy first quarter ended with the score tied 0-0, Maysville (2-0, 2-0 MVL) took control. Maysville running back Chase Roberts started the scoring with a 44-yard touchdown run around the left end on a misdirection play.

Then things went from bad to worse for New Lexington (0-2, 0-1 MVL) when Maysville recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff and kicker Nate Vallee converted a 36-yard field goal with 9:03 remaining in the second quarter, putting Maysville up 10-0 early in the second quarter.

Maysville later increased their lead to 17-0 after Roberts eluded New Lexington defenders once again, this time breaking loose for a 58-yard touchdown run.

But the Panthers weren’t done. They extended their lead to 22-0 with 4:14 left in the half with a bit of trickery, when quarterback Jacob Miller handed the ball off to running back Kaige Rucker, who pulled up short of the line of scrimmage and flipped a 3-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Couger Clarke.

Missed opportunities and mental errors plagued the New Lexington offense all night, as they failed to reach 200 yards of total offense in the game. New Lexington quarterback Collin Russell kept plays alive all night, but a few critical drops by his receivers on several third-downs doomed any chance of furthering the drive.

Russell was able to connect with wide receiver Seth Abrams in the end zone towards the end of the first half, putting New Lexington on the board for the only time on the night.

The second half was a lot of the same for Maysville, led by Chase Roberts who tacked on two more Maysville touchdowns. Roberts finished with 251 yards rushing and four touchdowns in the game, and as a team, Maysville racked up 457 total yards of offense.

Maysville will host Philo next week (1-1, 1-0 MVL), and New Lexington will look to capture their first win of the season when they travel to McConnelsville to take on the Morgan Raiders (0-2, 0-1 MVL).
