Game Preview: Maysville Hoping To Continue Dominant Start Against Rival Philo On Friday
< < Back toOne of the biggest rivalries in the MVL takes place early again this year as the Maysville Panthers host the Philo Electrics. Last week, Philo had a nail-biting, 19-13 loss to Licking Valley. Maysville, on the other hand, dominated New Lexington by a score of 43-9.
Maysville Coach Clarke is excited to finally get to the rivalry game with the Electrics.
“Records go out the door with this rivalry,” Clarke said. “Philo has improved each week, and we’re ready to take on the Electrics.”
Last week, Philo had a tremendous rushing attack, racking up 333 yards on the ground against Licking Valley. Maysville was able to limit New Lexington’s running game to just 120 yards total, as Maysville was able to clog up the middle of line of scrimmage for most of the game.
“We need to keep rallying to the ball and make Philo use the sidelines,” Clarke said. “The defensive line needs to play their best game of the season this week.”
Philo’s passing game, however, was not as superb as the ground game. Quarterback Cody Wickham completed only 48% of his passes for 171 yards, and also threw an interception. Philo has always been known as a run-heavy team, and Clarke wants to make the Electrics beat his team through the air.
“We need to get Philo to throw the ball,” Clarke said. “Shutting down the line of scrimmage is the goal of this week.”
Last year featured a thrilling game between the Electrics and Panthers with Maysville walking away with the 28-21 victory, and Clarke says he expects no different for the game on Friday.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Maysville.
