Point Pleasant Dominates Logan (WV) 63-8 [VIDEO]
< < Back toComing into week four, Point Pleasant had won 17-consecutive regular season games and had No. 18 on the brain.
Point Pleasant’s dynamic duo of Aden Yates and Cody Mitchell gave the Logan Wildcats more than they could handle, as the Big Blacks (4-0) maintained their undefeated record after a lopsided 63-8 win over the Wildcats (2-2).
The Big Blacks put the first points on the board within the first four minutes in the game when senior quarterback Aden Yates scampered into the end zone from five yards out. The two-point conversion attempt off of a fake field goal was successful and Point Pleasant lead 8-0.
On the ensuing drive, Logan responded with a quick drive, spurred on by a 42-yard pass from Ryan Miller to Zachary Accord that put the ball in Point Pleasant Territory. Two plays later, it was Accord carrying the rock into the end zone and after a successful two-point conversion of their own, and the game was tied 8-8 in the first quarter.
Point Pleasant’s following drive yielded another touchdown and Logan retook the ball, needing a score to shift momentum back to its side. One Cody Mitchell interception later and the game blew open. By the first quarter’s end, Point Pleasant led 29-8 and did not look back.
The Big Blacks—normally a ground-and-pound team—found success in the passing game tonight. Yates finished six-of-six for a total of 147 yards and a touchdown through the air.
Mitchell, on the other hand, left Ohio Valley Bank Stadium with his name in the record books.
Mitchell finished the night with five rushing touchdowns, one receiving touchdown and a defensive touchdown off of an interception, giving him the school record for touchdowns in a single game. With only eleven rushing attempts on the night, just under half of his touches resulted in touchdowns. Mitchell finished with 120 yards rushing in the game.
In addition to Mitchell’s historic night, punter Tanner Hill kicked his way into the record book as well, with a booming 75-yard punt, which was also a school record.
Though Point Pleasant’s offense stole all of the headlines, its defense stiffened up when the ball was in its own territory. Miller felt the pressure from the Big Black defense, leading to four interceptions and 18 incomplete passes. Though Miller finished with 231 yards through the air, the Big Blacks defense held the Wildcats to only 22 yards on the ground.
Point Pleasant will look to continue its winning streak next Friday night at home against its rival from right across the river, Gallia Academy (2-2).
