Week 5 power rankings – West Virginia
< < Back to1) Point Pleasant Big Blacks (5-0)
The Big Blacks solidified their place atop our West Virginia teams with a dominating 58-3 win over Gallia Academy on Friday. The backfield duo of quarterback Aden Yates and running back Cody Mitchell once again propelled Point Pleasant to the big win. That combination is one that should be nightmarish for opposing defenses the rest of the year, with Parkersburg South being next in line on Friday
2) Parkersburg South Patriots (3-1)
Speaking of the Patriots, they jumped one spot in this week’s power rankings not because of a win, but because they didn’t lose. The Patriots didn’t have a week five game, but performed extremely well in their week four 49-7 thrashing of the Warren Warriors. Garret Gilkeson and Brendan Schwendeman shredded the Warriors’ defense and they’ll be looking to ride that momentum into the rest of the season, starting with the undefeated Big Blacks.
3) Williamstown Yellow Jackets (4-1)
Falling one spot from a week ago, the Williamstown Yellow Jackets take the third spot in West Virginia. Williamstown traveled to Ravenswood last week, but the Yellow Jackets left with a big 60-20 loss. Williamstown won’t have it any easier this week when the St. Mary’s Blue Devils roll into town.
4) Parkersburg Big Reds (2-2)
The Big Reds are coming off of a 45-14 victory in the 110th meeting between them and the Marietta Tigers last week. Parkersburg racked up 445 yards of total offense and quarterback Josh Trembly led the offense with 149 total yards of his own. The Big Reds have the momentum on their side, but their game this week will not be easy as they take on Black Eagles of South Charleston. That game will be Parkersburg’s third against a top-ten West Virginia team.
