A festival celebrating America will take place Memorial day weekend in Jackson County. The 23rd annual Oak Hill Festival of Flags is set for May 22-25.

The Oak Hill Festival of Flags was started in 1992 by an organization initially brought together to preserve an old school building. Those efforts evolved into a weekend festival that celebrates the sacrifices of Americans and the patriotic spirit that resonates through the hundreds of unfurled American flags lining the streets, homes and businesses.

The festival features a crafter and vendor area, amusement rides and games, as well as contests and free entertainment.

On Friday there will be a Karaoke Contest, with cash prizes, with the first place winner becoming the opening act at 7:30 p.m., on the Saturday, May 23 for Meigs County native and three time World Champion Elvis Presley tribute artist Dwight Icenhower and the Promiseland Band.

Saturday night reserved seating is being sold, contact (740)418-3306 for more information.

Saturday’s events at the festival include a Pretty Baby contest, Business Olympics, a Dog Show, an opportunity to meet the Jackson County Patriots semi-professional football team, as well as musical entertainment by Thirst E Pony, Dwight Icenhower and the Promiseland Band.

WWII veteran James C. Jones, 93, of Oak Hill, has been chosen as the grand marshal for this year’s Festival of Flags grand parade for Sunday, May 24 at 4 p.m. According to Festival of Flags President Joyce McClurg, Jones was chosen as grand marshal because the committee wanted to honor and recognize World War II veterans this year.

He will also be a part of the Festival’s opening ceremonies at noon on Friday, May 22, by ringing Jackson County’s Ohio Bicentennial Bell 23 times.

Some of Sunday’s other events include a baton corps exhibition, performances by the Oak Hill High School Marching Band, Kat and the Road Dawgs, the Community Choir, Sounds of Harmony Gospel group, Dan McCarty and the 2BZ black light show.

The Oak Hill Festival of Flags Car Show will take place on Memorial Day, May 25. Registration is from 9 a.m. to noon. Judging begins at noon. The car show is open to all model and year vehicles. trailered vehicles are also welcomed. Car clubs are invited to attend. There is a $10 entry fee per car.
