An agreement calling for Athens-Hocking Solid Waste District to provide funding to help create a materials recovery facility was approved Monday by the district’s board.

The nonprofit Athens-Hocking Recycling Centers Inc. is developing the facility at Theisen Industrial Park near The Plains. It will sort recyclables, meaning that residents won’t have to sort them at home — a change that is expected to encourage more people to recycle.

District board members had agreed last February to provide money from a $3 per ton generation fee it charges garbage haulers in the two counties, but the actual agreement providing the funds to the nonprofit was not finalized until Monday.

The district will provide up to $120,000 a year for five years to the nonprofit for the materials recovery facility.
