Kasich Asks For Disaster Declaration For Buckeye Lake Area
< < Back toBUCKEYE LAKE, Ohio (AP) – Gov. John Kasich is asking federal officials to declare an economic injury disaster for three counties near central Ohio’s Buckeye Lake.
Such a declaration could lead to possible federal aid for the area.
In a letter dated Monday to the Small Business Administration, Kasich says businesses have suffered financially as the lake has been kept low while plans are made to replace a deteriorated dam. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says the dam is at risk of failing.
More than a dozen businesses, including marinas, bait shops and restaurants, told state officials they’ve lost significant revenue because of the lower water level.
Kasich says the situation has created a need for federal assistance through subsidized loans. He is requesting the declaration for Fairfield, Licking and Perry counties.
