Stuart’s Opera House in Nelsonville will host Peruvian dance group Adu for free performance on Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. The group will also visit area schools for workshops and performances, present field trips at the Opera House, and work with both Ohio University dance students and Factory Street Dance Studio.

Adu is a non-profit arts group. Their original piece “Sigo Siendo” addresses themes of maintaining cultural identity under pressure of assimilation and revaluing ancient traditions in a modern world. In addition to presenting the 50 minute original work, the members of Adu will be leading workshops in percussion, charango, traditional wind instruments and dance.

Director Antonio Vilchez is a national champion and professor in dance. As a choreographer, actor, afroperuvian dancer and percussionist, he has represented Peru in festivals in Chile, France, Greece, Germany, Spain, Mexico, Canada and the United States.

In addition to the free show at Stuart’s, Adu will perform shorter workshops and performances in Athens on Tuesday, Sept. 22 at Ohio University’s Baker Center at noon for Baker’s lunchtime concert series (second floor) and at the Athens Library at 7:30 p.m. All events are all free and open to the public. More information is available at (740) 753-1924 or www.stuartsoperahouse.org.

No tickets are needed for the performances or workshops. For more information, visit stuartsoperahouse.org.
