Norfolk Southern Railway Co. has lost out on a federal grant that the company was counting on to help expand its transportation hub, just south of Columbus at Rickenbacker Airport.

Norfolk is planning a $34 million project to expand capacity by 40 percent at its so-called intermodal facility where cargo arrives and departs by rail, truck and air, but the project was dependent on getting the grant.

The company applied for, but was not awarded, a $17 million federal grant to match its $17 million investment in the proposed project.

The project would have added 88 permanent jobs at the intermodal facility and more than 300 construction jobs.

Airport spokesman David Whitaker said it will be up to Norfolk to decide whether it wants to proceed with the project.
